Front Torsion Bar Adjustment Lever Removal Help
The full suspension refresh project continues, however very slowly. Just hit another roadblock. Can't get the damn height adjustment lever off. Used a pry bar to slide it off but nothing. Is there any tricks to this?
I tried hitting the torsion bar from the front of the car didn't budge. I thought this would make the torsion bar slide together with the adjustment lever out but it didn't. I tried hitting the torsion bar from the rear of the car side thinking the torsion bar would slide up front and leave the adjustment arm behind but nothing. Been going at this for 1.5 hrs finally gave up. There's no tension anywhere on the suspension, sway bar is disconnected. Struts are off. HELP!!! I need this suspension off! Eugene

Pry from two sides. Two screwdrivers should do the trick. Pry with a back and forth motion.

Not sure if you did already - cant tell from pics - but definitely use Kroil oil or penetrating fluid to help loosen the grime and stickiness between the metals. Back and forth prying motion should be the ticket..

At a loss really. This is not stuck, moves easily until a certain point, then it's like something is stopping it from coming out. Check this video out. Don't mind my 5 year old in the background.

can you put the part in the freezer for a few hours then try removing it... theory is the cold will cause the metal to shrink enough to pop out?? I've seen this trick work with other similar stuck parts. If you can't... you could also try spraying a can of air upside down around the part...

Can you remove the plug at the opposite end and tap out the torsion bar and adjuster? New caps are only a couple dollars from pelican if you have to drill a hole in it for removal.

put an adjustable crescent wrench on the metal lever... not quite tight against the metal.
Slide to touch the plastic knob. Tap the wrench lightly with a small hammer, toward the knob. Tap until the knob loosens. You can re-dye the red knobs with RIT dye (red) in hot water, will last forever. Fill the indented arrows, etc. with white out, wipe off. Voila'. |

thanks for your suggestion, but i'm somewhat confused. Which plastic knob are you referring to? I'm assuming red knob and plastic knob are one and the same but again not sure I know what are you referring to. Thanks again

You're vid shows you poking in a horizontal plane.
Looks like the pointer is coming in contact with the actual housing. Have you tried to aim the pointer to one of the corners? Otherwise, I go along with driving the t bar out from the other end. Or, lacking that - remove the a arm completely for better access. (You're already 85% there) Bill K

Yeah I tried prying it from different angles don't think that arm is touching anywhere but will take another look. . You're right though I think I'm just going to take the whole thing off with the cross brace. I was hoping to separate in the car so as not have to take off the cross bar but I guess not in the cards. At work all day today maybe I'll have some time to play with it later tonight

I had a similar problem. There is a hole on the back side of the crossmember (facing front of car) I was able to insert a metal rod through and tap it out. You've likely tried this but it's what worked for me. Good luck.

speeds5 were you ever able to figure out why the lever wouldn’t come off the torsion bar? Is this on the left drivers side?

sorry my memory is not very good, been 5 years, but it definitely came out and if I remember correctly just hitting from behind got it loose. Keep at it, good thing is you can’t break anything.
