I sold my core (overreved, bent valves) 2.7L long block for $1200; the CIS (with new airbox) for $500; distributor for $80, exhaust for $1500 (SSI's and Monty); fan and new alt $200 (cheep!)

Jorge, I swapped my 2.7 for a 3.0 before I knew anything (not that much now as a matter of fact). It was cheaper than a proper rebuild for me. But now that I know what the inside of a 911 motor looks like, it is potentially a candidate for a "Souk's Speed Shop" rebuild.

Some of the feed back to this thread has been great. And I am quite motivated now to start into the little guy

Thom, you've been known to pull of some amazing stuff, so I'm not at all surprised that you got that kind of money for you motor.

Ok, since you asked nicely, I'll let you in on my secret. I sold it on a VW site! I listed it on thesamba.com, and it sold it less than an hour!

other than case savers what ever you do to the 2.7 has to be done to all Porsche motors.

The reason that rebuilding a 2.7 costs more than say a 3.0 is because the 3.0 doesn't need line boring for one thing. The aluminum cases are more stable. I see you had your 2.7 line bored. What does that cost?
The other reason a 2.7 is perceived as more expensive is that you can't economize like you can on the later motors. Lots of people just "overhaul" (replace gaskets/bearings/rings/do heads but no other machine work) instead of rebuilding 3.0 and 3.2's with acceptable results. I just don't think you can do that with a 2.7.

Line boring 250.00 bucks.. big deal.. and I didn't even need it..
and this is also an option for all motors..
There are alot of Mods you can choose to do, I think goes with peace of mind.. more than anything else.

2.7

Not to echo what's been said already, but I agree with the post that stated before he knew anything, he replaced his 2.7 with a 3.0. I too was not the "best informed" when it came to a 2.7 engine before I replaced mine with a 3.0. I don't mean that in a negative way, either, but in a positive way. Since replacing my engine, there have been times that I regret not holding onto the 2.7 for some future modifications. Don't get me wrong: I'm very pleased with the 3.0 I have now. But at the end of the day, if one has the money, it's a sure bet they can "repair" a 2.7 to the point it is at least as good as a 3.0 and/or 3.2. But it takes money.

If I were Souk, I'd keep the motor and build into something really nice - webers, cams, pistons, and anything else. The caveat is I'd also buy a "reliable" 3.0 or 3.2. Having two engines can be fun. It's like having two different cars, which is nice.

Well, I want a second 911. One that has not been molested by previous owners as mine has been (you'll see a thread soon). Not that modifying one's car is a bad thing, but man if there is anything I hate, it is cutting corners, esp. on 911s.

Anyways, keeping the motor will allow me to play with modifications on the motor that is "on the stand" while I drive the one that is in the car. This too is very attractive, not that I didn't think of it before. The swap back and forth would be realatively easy, and not buying a second 911 will keep the lady of the house happy. You think I can sell a 4-5000 dollar rebuild job to her using that reasoning?

What if I junk the CIS and bolt on a supercharger? The will surely fix the low end deficit in the torque department. That coupled with a SSS (Souk's Speed Shop) brand of fuel injection. Or! no charger, but carburation with Keihins or Mukunis. Anyone crazy enough to have don't the Japanese carbs on their motor?

Souk:

I don't know if you can sell her on a $4-5000 rebuild, particularly when at any given time, you'll have an engine on a stand. You might want to ask yourself whether or not she can stand the continual sight of an engine just "hanging out" in the garage.

Superchargers: the only supercharger set up I know of for Porsches works with CIS. There's a few threads on this floating around.

Japanese carbs on German engines is the equivalent of schnitzel and sake IMO.

dd77: I'm talking about making my own manifold for injectors and a supercharger. I have made custom manifolds before, but since it will be forced induction, it wont have to be fancy. Anyways, that's something in the works..basement scientist if you will.

As for Japanese carbs, I think that is in the spirit of this thread. Build a 2.7 for cheap (4-5K US$ is not cheap, but...). PMO's are $2400-2800. That's nuts! I'll sell my motor if I couldn't do it with an intake/fuel system for less than that.

I have seen the threads on supercharging and other crazy ideas, but I am the type to blow something up in my face before I accept defeat.

Regardless, the ideas thrown out on this thread has been very interesting. So it looks like I may just keep the little 2.7 and eat Roman noodles for the next month or two. Ah, the college life...it'll never escape me as long as I keep throwing my money away on crazy laboratory(basement) experiements.

i have seen a lot of post saying how bad 2.7s are, but i have seen just as many saying that they are just as reliable with the right upgrades and maintenance. I guess I will find out!
