Supply and demand. Looks like I can sell my slot for twice what I paid. :D

But Sorry guys, excited for my slot weekend. For those that attended the first round, any tips for us? I got the book, I'm bringing a camera and I'll make sure to get a good night's sleep. is there a place to get coffee near by or do we need to bring our own thermos? Same for lunch, did everyone pretty much pack their own and hung out during the break?

tdw28210 04-07-2018 05:42 AM

I've been avoiding this thread for the last 3 months...because....anyway..... I am interested in a June or July date. Put me on your PM list Tony for those upcoming dates.

jferrante 04-07-2018 06:31 AM

Mcdonalds directly across the street and a ton of restaurants around for lunch. I would figure out how to take pictures and align them with notes. A picture will get you so far and a picture with good notes is really what you need.

DocG 04-07-2018 06:49 AM

Any opportunities for more weekend classes in the future? Weekdays are difficult for me. Also, was anyone able to make a video recording? I know there was some discussion about this. I would love to attend over the summer and would be interested in trying to find a solution to recording the class.

First engine rebuilding sessions.........

To everyone,

Thanks to the first group of guys that attended the inaugural Engine Rebuilding Classes. While it was considered a success, there is plenty of room to do a better and efficient engine teardown/rebuild demonstration. The participants were very helpful and enjoyable to spend the two-day sessions. I could not have asked for a better bunch of fun loving people to get this program started. It was a great experience for me.

I am not a trained Porsche nor a professional mechanic. Just another DIY’er who has enjoyed working with my cars. And have a satisfactory success in rebuilding more than a dozen SC engines with the help from other Pelicanparts members. My primary objective in having these engine rebuilding classes is to share my limited experience and to help other people over come the anxiety which most people have in their minds.

The positive reactions of people wanting for summer sessions is overwhelming. At this point, my main focus is to finish the April 2018 sessions and make them better as we proceeed with the program. The logistic of setting the venue and transporting the engines, tools, chairs, tables, etc. is a nightmare for an old guy like me. Without the help from my wife and son, I could not accomplish any of these.

The next sessions would be a 4-day stretch and hope to survive it. If there will be a next time, I will make it a 2-day session then a break. Last night, I was falling asleep while finishing my dinner and went straight to bed. Woke up fresh and motivated. Thanks.

Tony

Tnank you very much Tony and hope to attend your class in July, if it is offered.

Can these be recorded or streamed? Happy to pay for the vids. At the very least you could record/resell down the road, but not to record them seems like a travesty!

drcoastline 04-07-2018 02:21 PM

Just my opinion and I am not going to say it is impossible. But, with a group of this size all jockeying for position trying to see what is going on I think it would be rather difficult to video the classes.

Video recording was brought up in earlier posts and it was decided that making anything that was anywhere near professional would be difficult to do at the same time as teaching the group and also would hinder the learning and teaching flow to the group.

You'd be bleeping out the entire thing...

You could set up a stream and host a chat room at the same time. Have a partner run the chat room and que the questions. Limit the audience to a small group so that it would flow. Establish ground rules for submitting questions and do a webinar. Charge $$ to make it worth your time and you have a 2nd or 3rd revenue stream. A couple classes would pay for the production equipment. Just a thought. Seems like the appetite is there for customers. I'd pay.

That's a great idea but I think would work better on it's own. Not as part of this class. The way it is set up now I just don't see how it could work. For your idea to work I think the tear down and reassembly would need to be performed in stages, stopping after each procedure for Q&A. This setting just kept on moving.

hey tony, great idea. im in for june and july at any time other than parade week. thanks jimmy

Our session was way too informal to record. We were constantly asking questions, getting in each others way, changing positions while working on the engine/getting tools/whatever. This was 100% hands on not a lecture and just like some friends working together in the shop. Things might change in the future, I trust Tony, but that was session 1. Great job Tony, it was obvious you put a ton of effort into this. Well done.

I stayed in a hotel a few miles from the venue, some traffic but easy to navigate the area. I'm happy to answer any questions if its helpful. PM me.

You could .....

I'd pay.
Unfortunately, there are a lot more things in life that "you could" do than there are people who want to do it.

Tony is offering an astonishing opportunity for those that can attend. I think the only appropriate response is gratitude. He's working himself very hard to make this happen, and to ask for more isn't right.

If you'd like to make your vision a reality, you could do that. I encourage you to do so. But that's not this.

mahoneyj 04-09-2018 02:32 AM

Overall a great session and you can read all the books you want but until you start disassembly there is usually some anxiety. This class helps you get over the fear of dismantling and gives some hands on opportunity for the trickier stuff like piston ring removal and splitting the case. Not to mention putting it all together. I feel way more confident with starting my rebuild now that I had this opportunity.

As for streaming or recording that would be best for its own effort. It was a very casual and enjoyable environment and any type of recording would have changed that great vibe.

Andrew,

8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Lunch break : 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

We will spend the first hour of the first day socializing and getting to know each other. By 9:30 AM, we will start the introduction to engine teardown. The next day, we will assemble the engine and do the cam timing, sprocket alignment, etc.

Tony

Thanks I was going to ask the same question for the 4/14-4/15 class.

MrBonus 04-12-2018 10:41 AM

Since the class is full, are there any restrictions from bringing a step stool and pressing your face up against the glass from outside?

+1 Back in the 90's I was freaked out about cam timing through the whole top end process. Of course, it's one of the last things you do so stressed throughout.

It's very easy ONCE you do it. Wish I could have had a hands on experience to put fears to bed.

There was the Bruce Anderson class with Jerry Woods but never could cost justify given venue.

Not to bombard Tony with future interest, but having just gotten out of the 2nd round class, all I can say is thank you. Getting comfortable with the engine and removing all the sense of initial trepidation is simply spectacular. Thank you Tony for providing this immense service to the community. This is this forum and air-cooled Porsche enthusiasts at their very best.

Andrew,

You have been a good help to me yesterday by lending hands in the engine disassembly and assembly. After the class, I spent a couple of hours cleaning the room and preparing the engine for the next group today and tomorrow.

After I removed the rockers for cylinder 4#, the engine rotated with no unwanted resistance. And installed all the intake and exhaust rockers back. Engine rotated smoothly. Problem solved.

I will slightly change the work sequence for the engine rebuilding. Instead of doing the cam and valve timing at the end of the second day, I will have them at the first day instead when the participants are alert and focused including myself.

I was struggling at the end of the second day to focus and concentrate on what I was doing and that probably contributed to some of the problems. Today is the 3rd batch and another grueling 2-day 12-hour work schedule. A break between group sessions would be ideal next time.

Tony

Many thanks to Tony (and let’s not forget Amore!) for putting this class on! I have a much better direction for what I want to do with my engine in the future and the insider tips (JB Weld on the oil pressure switch seam, anyone?) made the class more than worth it!

tmaull 04-14-2018 10:02 AM

Great class. Big thanks to Tony for his patience and enthusiasm. Very happy I drove out for this, well worth the time, and infinitely more than worth the money. Thanks so much.

RDUNCe30 04-14-2018 02:29 PM

I want to add my thanks to Tony and Amore for being wonderful hosts to us lucky enough to be in the class. Tony and Amore were gracious to a fault and made us feel welcome and comfortable regardless of our experience. The Porsche/Pelican communities are lucky to have them as members.

Usually I would prefer a beating to driving on I-95, but the drive from Raleigh to PA and back was well worth the effort to attend.

It seems to me that our class had a mix of experienced wrenches looking for tips, less experienced wrenches looking for encouragement, and some who simply wanted to learn more about their engines for personal knowledge (these guys seemed to have good relationships with indy shops). I thought the blend was great because everyone had some nuggets to contribute in the constant BS'ing going on as Tony kept us moving with disassembly on day one and reassembly on day two. We obviously skipped a lot of the physical steps, but everything was discussed.

Regardless of if I ever do a rebuild or not for my car, I have a better understanding of what is involved and why the labor charges are what they are. I have even more respect now than before the class for those, professional or amateur, who have built one of these engines.

Tony worked his butt off to make sure each of us took away something of value. I really appreciate that - THANK YOU, TONY.

Sam

dyerkes 04-14-2018 05:34 PM

I agree with you Sam, we had a great mix of 911 enthusiasts all approaching this from different aspects, but thanks to Tony I think al of our goals were achieved. I think you set a record in regards to the amount of time you had to hold a crankshaft while Tony provided a wealth of knowledge as to the proper manner to remove and replace the crank to avoid damage.

Tony and Amore should be recognized as 2 very special Porschephites, as they truly have gone above and beyond to share their knowledge and love of the breed with others. While I know there are probably many more who want the same opportunity to have this experience, i can tell you that they do it purely to give back to the community, and that it is both exhilarating but exhausting to Tony and family for both handling the class itself as well as the class setup and breakdown. Hopefully this is something he can continue to offer, and if that is the case I encourage you to take advantage!

Regards,
David

dijinn 04-14-2018 08:25 PM

Yep, we had a nice mix of individuals in our class... and I am definitely glad I made the trip from Tampa. Hopefully, Tony gets a chance to recover after the back-to-back classes this week; I can only imagine how exhausting it is for him and his wife. Love the home-made Home Depot tools but there certainly are areas where I will be buying some Stomski tools! Hint: timing ;)

Was great meeting everyone and if anyone in the group ever makes it down to FL, let me know!

LIRS6 04-16-2018 07:00 AM

As a participant this past w/end, I can attest to his energy and enthusiasm after back-to-back two day sessions. The hands-on opportunity is fantastic - no matter how many times one might read Wayne's book, there is nothing like getting a real-time education. And with 22 hands and eyes, it's amazing how quickly a motor can be torn down and re-built. We had a great group of trouble-shooters, who managed to sleuth a bit to solve annoying issues. My deep appreciation to Tony and to his wife Amor, who seems to have endless patience for her over-the-top Porsche enthusiast husband.

Jason

PS - distance award is shared by brothers Saadat and Karim, who live in CA and flew in for the w/end.

2 days of videotaping? - I don't see it happening. An attendee isn't interested in doing that, they want to be hands-on involved....
