I’m heading to LA next week in prep for mechanical build, nearly finished at body shop so more updates and photos then...

Eric at Pelican Parts 04-11-2018 11:47 AM

It's looking good!!

How long are you going to be in town for? If you have some free time, would be nice to see the car and catch you while you're in town!

DHE11 04-11-2018 01:44 PM

That would be good Eric.
Will be in Burbank area Wed - Fri.
Catching up with some other P guys from Australia.
Will plan to go to Petersen Thu, then Festival of Speed on Sat and Luft on Sunday morning...

PM me and can see what works...

DHE11 04-18-2018 05:58 PM

In LA today catching up with the guys from Pro Motorsports and MCS.
Paint is progressing...

That looks awesome.
Totally worth the wait.

DHE11 04-20-2018 08:40 PM

Stopped by the paint shop today to drop off some more parts and see the panels being wet sanded prior to final coat.

A great week in LA is coming to an end... seen the colour on the chassis and I’m really happy with it, so all the panels are getting done now and can finally think about moving to the final build stage....

After spending the day at CFOS today, will finish the trip by going to Luftgekuhlt tomorrow morning before heading back to Australia.

Can’t wait to see this all together.

DHE11 04-24-2018 05:04 PM

Going back together.
Rear quarters on.

Walking around Luft on Sunday I saw four Rubystone cars and nearly every other colour except Karminrot... The Rubystone 964Cup looked good, and while Karminrot is a lot brighter, once I get some black and white on it, it should tone down and be a little easier on the eye.

Seeing Justin Wilson's name is a sad reminder....great driver. More happily, great project, love the color choice and those fat wheels. John in CT

Looking good D. I like the look of the exposed allen key bolts fixing the rear guards and roof, they look very purposeful like the rest of the build.

DHE11 05-01-2018 02:16 PM

New rockers fitted...

rockers look good from here. eager to see a shot from a little further back so i/we can get a better picture of the whole package (pre-livery).

ADDvanced 05-02-2018 06:21 AM

Wow. Subscribed. This is going to be too pretty to race, maybe you should just keep it in the garage. j/k.

I know, the paint has come up really well, and ill take picture or two - but this car (like my previous one) will be tracked and used for competition, definately wont be a garage queen!

My previous widebody got peppered at the track and had lots of hard earned (and now trendy) patina when i sold it.
I may weaken and put some protective film on this one at the front or the leading edge of rear guards.... wasnt planning to, but will see.

Interested to hear from anyone who has done that on a track car, and complications with applying over or under sponsor decals etc and how often, if at all, it needs replacing as that would be a hassle...

a pic from further back....
(limited by the area and other cars to get the wider shot)

The front bar currently fitted is very low, and would get wiped out in hillclimbs, MK’s and maybe even some circuits at home like Wakefield Park where the track limits and ripple strips really get some use, so needed something that would sit a little higher but still have the ducting vents.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528285242.jpg

Wanted something different from the old RSR style and saw this old race car pic below, “IROC style” but suits a longhood with a centre cooler and brake duct inlets...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528284728.jpg

Found one in widebody width and it arrived yesterday so its now being prepped for paint.
Also got a Ducktail style tailbase with wing mounts while I was at it and can get painted together.
This will provide two set ups I can mix and match for high and low speed tracks, also saving damage by fitting the non splitter front where I need the ground clearance

DHE11 06-20-2018 02:53 AM

Nearly there, down to some finishing details (for the body anyway...)

i get so excited when you update this thread. i love this build.

R lights because of the weight? functionality? or aesthetic?

Mothy 06-20-2018 05:27 AM

Doing the same lights for mine.
I like the idea of LED units instead of the old Hella’s
Where did you get the light units?

Thanks Chris,
The lights actually came on the car.
I decided to keep them as it fitted in with the weight reduction mission, and they have grown on me and now I’m “sort of” continuing the R theme with the front.
Got some covers to replace the front light assemblies (removed more weight) and gets a functional brake vent hole similar to the 911R front end...

chrisbalich 06-20-2018 11:17 AM

as you approach completion, what do you think race weight will be?

DHE11 06-20-2018 11:53 AM

Took some more weight out with 935 front suspension, poly windscreen and wheels.
Put some more back in with extra roll cage bars for chassis stiffness and safety, and some rear suspensions mods and bracing.

Expect wet with driver and maybe some driver cooling gear around 2400lbs
(Or less....)

2400 wet with a driver is going to be a proper weapon. holy cow.

DHE11 06-21-2018 04:27 AM

Fitting the front signal cover / vent.
I had some blanks but they were only half the length covering the indicator void, and I then still needed to buy the horn grille cover, or make up some mesh grille.

So found these, and like all fibreglass parts required some cutting and modification!
It’s really never ending.... but I keep reminding myself, be patient, just do it once the way you want it now, and will be better than changing it later.

DHE11 06-21-2018 02:06 PM

Some of the larger body parts now fitted...
While a little harsh on the eyes in full sun, pleased to see the lines of the car still show up, and are not totally dominated by the colour.

Hi Eric,
Yes, after doing research and comparisons, decided to go with with APR wing pictured below.
Spec’d the attach spacing so ill be able to run on my new GT3 style duck tail, or the RS3.8 tailbase.
APR are making the wing now, and I plan meet KC and pick up early July

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1529620586.png

Will do my own testing, but expect the GT3 style duck tail to be the go to set up on the high speed circuits with lower drag penalty.

Looking forward to getting back to Bathurst and our new track at Tailem Bend to test....

Hey mate
Forgot to tell you I’m in the US at the moment
I’ll get that booster back in a couple weeks...
Man that car is PINK!!! 😎

Eric at Pelican Parts 06-22-2018 02:28 PM

Awesome news! Does this mean you're going to be running two different sets of uprights, and at different heights?

Let me know when you figure out the dates you'll be out here again, I'll make plans to meet up with you!

DHE11 06-22-2018 02:54 PM

Yes Eric,
Two tailbases and two sets of uprights.
Have run a widebody with RS3.8 tail on the previous car with a much smaller wing element.
The challenge on this car will be balancing the front with more rear aero.

For low speed events like club motorkhana's I can remove wing entirety and just run the duck tail.

Yeah, it's pretty bright...
(You'll be able to come see it in person in a few months...)

DHE11 06-24-2018 04:34 AM

Some boxes arrived this week!!!
New wheels... Light and wide @ 15-17lbs for 17"s

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1529841795.jpg

Thanks to Ryan @ Jongbloed who made a very light set of wheels for me.
Was a bit of planning involved, and by knowing more about the car, its weight and how it was going to be used, we could optimize a wheel that would be super light, but importantly still be strong and reliable on track.

Ended up going with an aero series wheel with a smaller centre and stepped barrel which helped keep the weight down and saves well over 12lbs of rotating mass for the set.

The front and rear look a different colour in the photo below, but it's just reflection, they are both anodised black (paint's too heavy)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1529842132.jpg

LJ851 06-24-2018 04:03 PM

Those wheels are HOT !!!

DHE11 06-25-2018 05:12 AM

Knowing I was chasing weight, Jongbloed built the wheels with all titanium hardware... saved nearly a pound per wheel replacing the standard ARP fasteners!

puddy 06-25-2018 05:59 AM

Wow thats a bold colour, cant wait to see if finished and those wheels are awesome!
