Should I replace this wiring behind the alternator, pics inside

I am in the process of troubleshooting several CIS issues, including possible air leaks, incorrect WUR, and a lack of voltage at the WUR plug. I was measuring about 5.8mv at the WUR plug and decided to trace the wiring which obviously leads to the alternator.

Should I replace this wiring or test it somehow? Looks like the PO used electrical tape in several places...

I assume if I disconnect most of the engine bay harness and hook up a power supply to the alternator wiring I should be able to measure the same voltage at the WUR plug right?

Ouch, that’s bad. The big red wire is the main positive one; bare wire there is not good at all. I have a wiring harness for an ‘83 I would let go. It would have some unused features but they could be left unconnected and taped up out of the way. If you need it.

RX... given what's visible, there's likely more of interest that's unseen. My vote goes to replacing entire harness rather than mending. Were the engine onboard, I'd think differently. Before paying full retail for new harness, perhaps you have skill (and time) to make it---and make it better than off-the-the-shelf. (Nice project you have on hand.)

Thanks for all the quick replies!

I PM'd timmy2 already and I appreciate the offer Steam Driver on the 83 harness. I am going to do some further investigation and am also leaning toward a new harness.

BTW the engine is still in the car. I am very close to just dropping it especially if I need to in order to replace the harness.

Just replied to your PM Rob.
That harness is done after 43 years of service.
Don’t hook up your battery, you have exposed wiring on the fat red cable that is a direct connection to the battery via the starter with no fusing at all.

Congrats.

I think you found your "CIS" problem and the reason for the WUR 0V from your other thread.

But more importantly, you avoided a major issue like a fire when the harness shorts out.

Replace the harness with right one for your car. Looks like timmy2 is the guy you need here.
