Clock replacement gauge
Has anyone replaced their clock with a more *informative* piece of equipment, i.e. something like a combo volt/CHT gauge? In my Carrera I have a clock on the stereo and one on my wrist, so the need for another one in the dash is not that great.
I figure it would be pretty straight forward to convert an extra oil/fuel level gauge to be a combo volt/CHT gauge - make a little circuit to match the inputs (voltage/CHT sensor output) to the sweep of the oil/fuel level needles, have the face re-screened and voila - more needles for the gauge addicted Porsche driver (like me) to look at. I have a hard time believing I'm the first person to ever think of this, but have turned up nothing in my searches. I called North Hollywood Speedo and asked them, and they said thet'd never heard of doing such a thing.

The combo gauge sounds like it could be a pain, but it should be pretty easy to adapt a vdo volt gauge to the clock hole.

Have you seen the big red light from San Diego Motorsports. It fits the clock hole perfectly and acts as a larger oil pressure gauge. Piece of cake to install, piggybacks the smaller gauge and looks cool to! I run HPDE and like the larger warning. Very similar look to what you might see in a race car.

I think a stopwatch would look cool in lieu of the clock. Digital or analog. Anyone know of a round console-mounted stopwatch?

Here 2 1/16" vdo
voltmeter and here the pro series 2 5/8" vdo pro gauge Then all you need is an adapter.

OK, I'm really thinking about doing something with this... I called Palo Alto Speedometer and they guessed it'd be about $200 (!) to re-screen the gauge. The circuitry part should be pretty straight-forward -based on a microprocessor and some A/D and D/A. Guess that EE degree cames in handy now and then. The next step is to get a donor gauge at the next swap meet and get to work.
Question: given the choice, which would you want - volt/cyclinder head temp or volt/amp gauge?

a voltage gauge is important, IMO..a bad regulator that leads to an over charge can create big problems.. and the CHT will allow you to taylor your driving style to conditions, especially in mountian rides.. oil temp responds to slow/long delay to engine current driving conditions.. an amp ga. is not necessary in our elec. systems, IMO.. amp ga. can be important in other systems.. a real nice system would have 6 CHT, and 6 EGT, but that's overkill, generally speaking.............. Am I the only one who uses my clock? When a 20- or 30-minute track session starts, I set the red indicator to the point where the session will end. Then I can see at a glance how much time I have left in a session.
