Steering Column Noise
Hello from new 914 owner. sorry to say I know nothing about these cars....yet.
Steering wheel/column makes rubbing noise when turn the wheel. Coud this be a bad bearing or coupling of some sort and how do you go about replacing? Thank you. |

There is a bearing inside the steering column, however, before you start thinking about that bearing I would look at the steering knuckle which is in the area just above where your clutch and brake pedals are. Those can go bad and transmit noise up through your dash.

Thank you, Checked again, no noise near clutch but definite rubbing noise at the steering wheel. Took off horn pad noise seems to be right where wheel meets steering shaft.

Within the 914 steering column is a bearing and a sleeve. Do you have play in the steering wheel? Is there a difference from up and down versus side to side? Typically it is the sleeve that wears out.

Now I’ve owned all year 914’s and as I remember, the 75 914 was the easiest to have to replace the sleeve due to the ignition switch within the column design.

Hello, @ Jess P, a little movement both up/down and side to side. Not a lot of play. I see that there is a metal sleeve fix for 928. is thee one specific for 914?

I think that the 928 sleeve is sometimes adapted for use in the 914 to fix this issue.
I don't know details, though. --DD

The sleeve in the 914 steering column also fits the 928. It’s the same, both carry the same part number. Now, I’m assuming you have the stock steering wheel. It’s not difficult to replace the sleeve and I mentioned that the steering column on my 75 was much easier to work on than my 70. You could just remove your steering wheel to take a cursory inspection of the column. There could be a piece broken off the turn signal assemble that’s making all this noise. It’s easy at that point to just slide out the entire turn signal assembly to see the sleeve. That’s what I like about the 75. If you want I can take pics of mine to post and show you what the process is.

Thank you for all the help to a Newbie; Yes, stock steering wheel. I have to buy 27mm socket, as I don't have that size. I have seen video of the sleeve replacement on a 911. I assume it's the same method i.e. remove plastic bits and gently hammer in the new one. Once I get the steering wheel removed, I can better see if turn indicator is rubbing. Would love pics, but don't want to put you through a lot of trouble. Best regards.

Steering column noise
Here are a few pics of my 70 914. The column has been updated to a 75 column. Once you remove the 27 mm nut, remove the steering wheel. There are 4 screws to remove as you can see on my pics. Carefully, remove the turn signal assembly. At that point you can better see the sleeve and the bearing. Grasp the steering rod and move it up, down and side to side. Tell us what you see.

Well I got the socket and removed the 27mm nut, however, I keep trying to pull the steering wheel and can only get it to move 1/4"-1/2".
This is after using a can of WD40. Is it just stuck or is there something else that has to be un-done? At least on old American cars I can use my steering wheel puller. |

Yahoo, after 2 cans of silicon spray and a lot of wiggling the wheel mm by mm, I finally got the steering wheel off. From what I can see. the shaft is loose within what i think i see is bearing. If I try to move the shaft up/down-left/right in a circler motion, I can see the bearing move clockwise around the shaft. There is play within the whaft and bearing. Will the 911 metal sleeve work here?

Was there supposed to be a C-Clip on steering shaft behind steering wheel (after spline)? If so, mine was missing and is there a part number. Thanks again |
