Plug wires to distributor cap wrong??

Hey guys:
I tried to be really careful when I replaced my plug wires, paying close attention to which wire went where on the distributor cap.
When I went to put the cap on, I needed to rotate it 90 degrees to get the 2 clips attached, which got me thinking... Does this mean I have them connected wrong?
If I'm looking at the cap on the distributor. which is #1, #2, #3 and #4?
I know the firing order (from Haynes), but I'm not sure if it matters how the wires connect to the cap. Please help this newbie out!
Thanks!!

The cap is keyed so that it only goes on the distributor one way.

When the distributor driveshaft is installed in the correct orientation, the left-front cap tower is for the #1 cylinder. (Note there is a thin line in the distributor body toward the left-front--this scribe line indicates #1.) The right-front is #4, the right-rear is #3, the left-rear is #2. The distributor turns clockwise, and the firing order ("Zundfolge") is 1-4-3-2.

I'm more visual, so I remember where #1 is and that the left-side wires cross while the right-side wires don't.
