What exactly is the difference between an 1800cc VW Bus engine and a 1.8L 914 Engine?
Are the heads different. How about the cooling tin?
Thanks. |

![]() I thought it was just the cam and the compression ratio... the bus had 7.3:1 vs. 8.6:1 on the 914 and *some* bus' came with carbs.. europe models as well as '74-'75 models with auto. trans. used L-Jetronic f.i., otherwise dual carbs.... the heads are the same... and I *thought* the pistons were the same(same dish) how were the pistons different? http://tunacan.net/t4/reference/case.htm

I just found some info in Tom Wilson's book:
"Basically, the 1.7 - and - 1.8 liter 914 engines are very similar to their VW counterparts, differing only in air filter placement, sheet metal and exhaust valve material." |

compression ratio on 1.8L 914 is still only like 7.6:1, so it's not much more than a bus. i bet if you check the part numbers of cam and pistons and probably heads too, the numbers for a bus and a 914 are the same. now there will be a difference maybe in the oil fill and the dipstick, at least there is with a vanagon, right off the top i don't know a bus 1.8.

Well not only does it have a differnt cam and crank. the block is also differnt. The 914 block is drilled out for the dip stick. adapting a bus case for a 914 is really easy though. the heads are also different as well. Not horribly. they have differnt compressions.
