Question in Fuel Injection & Max Engine Size
Just Curious:
How big can you increase the 2.0 engine & maintain the stock fuel injection system? I'm thinking of adding larger pistons to increase horse power but I also want to maintain the stock FI setup. On the same topic, what size pistons work well for a street setup without cooling issues or any other issues. Thanks.........................Vern |

In a discussion this week, it was said that 2.3-2.4 would be the upper limit.
Stock pistons work great for the street, without issues...hah! M

From what I've read the d-jet system only works well with the stock setup which makes sense since that's what it was designed and calibrated for. If you want to add a few more hp (while retaining the d-jet), put in the Euro pistons and cylinders.

how big can you go with a 1.7? I called northwest connecting rod today and they said I can go with a 1.7 or 1.8 for the same price with just a different set of pistons and cylinders, or I could go with a 2.0 for an extra 150. He said it'd work fine with a 1.8, but would it be ok with a 2.0?

Depends on what is being changed.
2.0 pistons will not work with 1.7 or 1.8 rods and crank. They'll pop right out at the top!! You can get big-bore Bug pistons of 94mm that have the right pin height, but I don't know what that height is. The 1.8 cylinders do not fit the 1.7 head unless the head is machined. Ditto the 2.0 ones. It would be pretty remarkable to see a complete 2.0 crank/rod/piston/cylinder swap for only $150 more than renewing the 1.7 parts... You should ask Jerry what is included in all that. Perhaps he means if you bring in a 2.0 it's only $150 more to rebuild than a 1.7 or 1.8? --DD

well I told him what I hda and that's whta he told me he could do with what I have. He said it would almost be easier to make it a 1.8 than a 1.7 so he would do either for the same price. I'll call and ask bout the 2.0 next time I get a chance.

Had to bring an old post back alive... :-)
My 2.0 engine is out and will be rebuilt soon enough. Using the stock D-Jet, can I go to 96MM P/C's or am I limited to the stock Euro P/C setup? What else would I need to run 96MM pistons? I'm trying to weigh out all options for that extra bit of zip while maximizing my ROI. Feedback/Opinions??? Thanks, Jason

Using 96mm pistons works fine although its best to check the A/F ratio on a dyno. You can adjust the MPS with a little skill to have the A/F ratio right.

What about the cam? Rods? and so forth... Sounds like the 96mm barrels are a no brainer if you can simply bolt hem on with other stock components. Am I overlooking anything obvious? Thanks, Jason

Cam has to be a basic cam or a Web73 grind although I am trying a modified one from Jake.
Rods have to be stock rods but you can install ARP rod bolts so they will last. A better oil pump is nice to say a 26mm one. For more hp go with head work! The art of head work will help these heads on the exhaust side because thats where the restriction is on a 2.0L. Improved flow due to careful porting and valve grinding is important. A CFR header will also gain you 10hp.

Jusat so I'm clear, you can take a stock 2.0 engine, repalce the pistons and cylinders witha 96MM kit and run with no problems? Also, if I do this, how much HP (seat of the pants) differnece can typically be expected?
In this setyup wodul there be much of a differnece goign with one kit over another? I have found kits that are German iron OEM, kits from Keith Black,. various kits on Jakes site (as well as Steve Stromberg's)... the list goes on. Will one be better than another in this otherwise stock configuration? Thanks, --Jason PS: Today is a good day, my case which I thought was cracked, is OK! Yippeeeee!!!!!!

Yes, you can just install new pistons and cylinders if you bottom end is in good shape. Once you pull off the old p&c's you can measure the rods side clearance atleast. If the motor has 100k miles on it I would rebuild it completely.
New cam and lifters from Jake rebuild rods w/ARP bolts Piston/cylinders in order of quality- #1- L/N Nikkies #2- OEM German cylinders bored out to 96mm with new pistons #3- all the rest......... Get your heads rebuilt by Len at Hoffman Auto Machine. All 2.0l heads suffer from cracks at the sparkplug. Improper seat install will mean a dropped valve seat later on so go with the good guys on your heads. maybe install the HD valve springs so you get alittle better rpm outta it too. oh, hp if you go with 96mm pistons, rebuild the heads with HD springs and high quality valve job, Web 73 cam and you should be in the 100-110hp range. Most stock 2.0l's don't make 95hp. Also, you need to switch to early SSI heat exchanges and junk the later style ones.

Yup. They're in with "all the rest"; likely toward the bottom of that category. I believe they are made in China, and the workmanship is reputed to be so-so. I know two people who have ordered them, both had one broken cylinder in the kit. The broken one was replaced with no fuss in each case.
