I can say with certainty that the Triad is not the high-end performer, the power peaks early.

My car lost a few mph topend.

Ok- what's the difference between the OE unit for 700+ and the replica for 500+ sold by PP and the ~250-300 unit from dansk sold by performance products? If someone tells me one is better than the other and why, I won't ask any more questions. Thanks!

Triad, Triad, Triad

When shopping for a teener I drove lots of cars w/ aftermarket systems (Bursch, Monza, ...) and none of them impressed me. Either the sound quality was wrong, or the overall sound level was too high, or there were wickedly annoying resonances at certain RPMs. I vowed only to run the stock muffler when I finally found a car. That was until I heard cars running the Triad system. The sound quality was rich, deep, and mellow; makes the 914 sound much more mature.

Well, the day finally came that I got serious and decided I needed that edge to beat the Miatas in my autocross class. I ordered the Triad system and installed on my otherwise stock 74 2.0. Wow! Like Miles noted the peak torque moved down in the curve, but unlike Miles, I don't think I gave up much top end. Obviously w/o dyno results this is purely subjective. For autocrossing and back road bombing, the new power band (3000 - 5200) works great.

Well, one muffler to the next appears to have knocked about 10mph off the top. I do love the factory muffler, but I don't need to go 135.

..everywhere..

Is, as Kevin Powers said, the Triad not much louder than the OE muffler? I'm too old to go around makin' boy-racer sounds.

The Triad is much louder than the OE muffler. It just has, what I like to call, a more 911-ish, Porsche-style sound.

I only speak for the dual-outlet version; can't say how the single-outlet style sounds.

I may have misinterpreted what he said. After rereading the thread, I think he was commenting on DD's statement that they (Triads) get louder after a couple of years. Anyway, I'll definitely be going the OEM route.

Triads are louder than stock? Maybe a hair.. it's not brash midrange noise, it has a very low q-factor, and the noise is all lumped up around 125-200hz.

Thump-thump-thump... and so on..

I like my stock Nanna and when plowing I don't have to make tractor sounds.

The aftermarket ones I've run sound like a loud, never ending phart. My empty head starts resonating at 350 mHz. Bad, Bad , Bad vibrations (sung to the Beach Boys tune of .........,)

I can't believe you are up.

I like the resonance that kicks up from the Triad in the mid 3s, and gets louder til the mid 4s, I mean from the time I start the car, til I park it..

Nope. Similar in size and style and layout, but different in the internal construction. It can be "sport-ized", but the result is really obnoxiously loud. Definitely louder than the Bursch.

3) Anyone dynamometer tested either one?
Not that I've seen the results of.

Question for Dave, what brand is Pelicans reproduction 2.0 muffler, it does not seem price competitive with some other places.
I don't know who makes it.

I started out my 914 life with a stock '76 2.0 with the stock exhaust, old and tired but worked well and was quiet. Then went to a Bursch, oops! The unit started rusting before I opened the box, and the sound and power were both off. Then my car was stolen and stripped. When I rebuilt it, I put in a 2.0 six with a stock banana, good, quiet sound and good power, then went to a single outlet (no longer in production) from Triad. Noticable seat of pants power and a much more "porsche" sound, not loud. Then went to a 2.7 six and ran the same single outlet from Triad for a while and decided to try the dual outlet Triad. The sound is all Porsche, low and strong, and the power is awesome. By the way the single outlet I took of the six was run for 11 years without a problem. No rust, and no appriciable sound increase, The unit is now in the archive at Triad if you want to take a look at it. The Triad unit is painted in 1500 VHT paint and holds up well, If you want a differant coating on a triad unit I am sure Dave could ship it without paint.
I will run a Triad exhaust as long as I have an air cooled Porsche!!
This got a little long but I hope it helps.
Eric

Whose car was it at JP's last year? Yours or Dave's? That thing was pretty loud...

That was Dave E's car you saw at JP's. The Triads are fairly loud but so is the Bursch. I have seen the Mittlemotor muffler and it weighs a ton like the OEM unit. I run a Bursch and yes its rusty but that just means its getting lighter everyday.
