1.7 injection on 2.0?
Friend of mine just scored a 2.0 sans injection and he was wondering if he could just use the 1.7 injection to run it...
I told him he'd have to figure out a way to mount the intake runners... He might need larger injectors... re calibrate the MPS.. Anyone have any ideas? |

To the best of my knowledge, you can't do this. The intake runners are smaller and have a different offset/mounting angle. There's prolly more, but I'm just stupid.
As far as the 1.7 harness, I asked Bowlsby and he said "electrically" they are the same/similar. Some of the connections are slightly different (location wise). That said, if your friend needs an intake plenum, runners, air cleaner, injectors, pressure sensor and brain, I believe I have them all and would be glad to help him out. One or all, email me if interested and I would answer Monday, otherwise, post here or send a PM. ![]()

with all the fitting and other hassles, just buy a 2.0 FI system. i bet for the cost of the dyno time to tune the 1.7 manifold pressure sensor, you could get the whole 2.0 d-jet system. just look around.

I think you can make the 1.7 parts fit if you drill the hole for the center mounting stud on the intake runner pipes. At least, I think you can make them fit together. I'd be somewhat cautious of using all 1.7 components, though. Not only will the intake choke the engine at least a bit, but the injectors may not be able to flow reasonably to feed the 2.0 displacement. Or rather (since 914 injectors flow a lot more than required), you may not be able to tweak things to get the mixture "right" across enough of the RPM/load conditions.
The 2.0 system is proven. It's definitely a better way to go on a stock 2.0 engine. --DD

If you install 2.0L injectors and a vanagon TB it will work. Easier to just get the 2.0l parts.

it will run, but
i had one of these come thru my shop once; it ran ok up to about 2800 & then you could feel the thing go lean & lose power; it would not wind up to 5000

Hmmm, I have seen two of these setups and mostly they ran fine. I did help tune them some as they were running lean but thats because they just used a stock 1.7MPS which leaned out at WOT.

Geoff,
How much different is the vanagon TB as compared to the 2.0L? Any thoughts on the effect of its use on volumetric effiency? Can't you adjust the WOT of the 1.7L MPS to accomidate the larger displacement? Thanks, L. McChesney lamcchesney@netzero.net |

The 2.0l vanagon TB is sized like the 2.0l 914 TB at 45mm but it is setup for side draft mounting prefect for a 1.7l.
The problem in adjusting a 1.7l mPS to a 2.0l seems to be in the spring rates. They don't just adjust right, as the mid-range setting is off. I have never measured the spring rates but I suppose I could in my spare time. Geoff
