Mail Order Machine Work ??
I'm about ready to take apart my 2.0.
Where does everyone recommend to have the machine work done, by mail order ? Case needs to be align bored, plus the crank has been turned once ( I think ). So I'll need larger OD and ID main bearings. Doing a search, RIMCO seems to be the location of choice.

Check with OTTO about a GOOD used case & crank. They are not expensive. Right now oversize case bearings are cheap - last year they were not available. You are better off to stay stock. I'll bet good used parts will not cost more that modifing yours.

don't over look lifter bore wear...I am only speculating but I think lifter bore wear contribute to major oil pressure problems and possibly cam wear....

Here's were the problem started.
She's bleeding bad :(:(:(:( I think almost any case will need to be align bored. I'm not that lucky. My concern is the turned crank, too. Having to have bearings oversized both directions. Otto, what's a ballpark on the oversized bearings ? Can you send me a PM ? Best way to box it up ? Long trip from up here at the edge of the earth.

RIMCO... check their web site. There are plenty of people here on the forum who had some of their work done at this place

the aluminum alloy of the T4 case is stronger than the magnesuim T-1. T-4 line boring is rare. It is much less prone to main bore distortion. That also explains the limited availability of over-sized main bearings for T-4. Raby also confirmed this when I spoke to him. If the crank is 0.010 over, I would use it as is. are the journals smooth with an even shinny color? can you feel surface imperfections with your finger nails? the slightly dark brown in the center is normal oil staining. Any blue . Why do you htink your case needs a line-bore? Did you torque it together and measure it? Does it have a bump on the bearing saddle in the center running diametrically? discoloration on a crank journal is a bad thing. AKA burned or over heated blueing

Next question is durability. With 20 over and 20 under bearings will I have a long term durability problem ?
This is a road car. A couple AX's per year, just for fun.

reduced diameter and surface area on teh bearings typically reduces life expectancy under heavier loads (AX) but I would deffer to the opinion of a proffesional air cooled engine builder. describe the condition of your parts. Dont go to,020 unless you must.

Just had my new case align bored. Idiot before me didn't balance the crank, rods, FLYWHEEL, and PRESSURE PLATE as a rotating assembly. Apparently, heavy torque and side load on a piece of steel, wrapped in aluminum sleeving will distort the aluminum. Who knew?
There are lots of reasons for a align boring. It's not uncommon to have to align bore any aluminum case if balance is bad, improper drivetrain care was provided, builder made a boo-boo. The aluminum is much stronger, but it is aluminum in spite of itself.

Lee Leighton's Racing Engines
Riverside, CA. 909-682-3816 (sorry no web page) He built a screeming 1776 for my VW that was balanced and dino'ed. There is a place up the street from his shop that will bore the case. They did mine...was great work. Tell him what you want and he will make it happen. Great pricing to. Not the fastest work. Tell him I sent ya.

Headflow Masters, http://www.audiracvws.com , is somewhere down in the San Diego area. Don't know if he does cases or just heads. He comes recommended by Raby for head work.
