914 front calipers
Early 72 914 front calipers. Found them leaking so I went to rebuild them and found the pistons were badly pitted, any ideas where I can gest some good used or rebuilt units. They seem to be NLA from our gracious host. Auto Atlanta has rebuilds for $155 each - ouch. Anybody know if someone is making stainless steel pistons?

I would get the bmw brakes... no machining needed for '72... plus a FLAPS will have them for around 50 each

A FLAPS?? Yeah, I am starting to think that the BMW 320I or Volvo 240 caliper set up is the way to go. What are the pros-cons of such conversions?

FLAPS: "Friendly Local Autp Parts Store"
![]() to me, there are few cons: you should upgrade to a 19mm M/C... but, you probably want to do that already... the only other "CON" is that it's not stock... some people would be really bummed about a non porsche/vw product... the pros: better brakes that can be replaced easier/cheaper! it's a lot better for me to be able to run down to auto zone or pep boys and get 320i pads(or calipers)(or 2002 pads/calipers) that they have in stock than have stock brakes shipped in from whereever... seriously... I went to the bmw 2002 brakes... and eventhough the plumbing was a Pain... the finished product worked great and saved my ass by helping me avoid an accident with a Ford F-250... brakes are something I don't believe in being cheap about... erveything else is free game!

there is a con i can think of. the rotors will get hotter, and cannot dissapate heat as quick, when youre using a rotor that wasnt designed for larger pads. go to a vented setup if you would like to run larger brakes.
this is just my opinion. othres may disagree

Aaron, I had no issues under normal driving/braking of the rotors getting too hot... either in highway driving or stop-go traffic... I see your concern... esp. if you were going to race the setup... but I don't think, at least in my experience, the heat dissipation was an issue
Jeremy, I used the BMW, and I haven't seen anything about the volvo setup... it's whatever you think... if the volvo pads are slightly smaller than the 320i brakes... that may be the way to go, to take Acox's advice under consideration... I used the 2002 brakes, so they were smaller than the 320i brakes... but still a decent amount bigger than the 914 brakes... let us know what you decide... I'd like to see size comparisons of the pads of all 4!

I installed the BMW 320i brakes on my '74. The difference is like going from no brakes to having super brakes.
As far as overheating, I have never noticed a problem. I really don't know if my old 914 brakes worked properly but considering the fact that I always had to break early to insure stopping, I would think the orig setup would experience overheating due to length of braking time needed to stop the car. The later 914's require minor machining to use the BMW brakes & I've heard that the Volvo (much bigger) brakes are a perfect match without any machining. |

since he has a '72, there should be no machining required for BMW...

I'm using Girling 4 piston calipers from a solid rotor volvo. You are going to need to use a brake tee to plumb them in considering volvo uses two inlets instead of one. I have posted directions on a previous thread.

tat2dphreak, I can't get the link to your Yahoo gallery to work Could you post a picture or two of the 2002 conversion? I've wanted to upgrade the front brakes, but don't like the idea of the pad overhang of the 320 conversion.
Thanks, Harvey

there are no close ups of the setup... I got in a hurry to finish the brakes and never took pics...
I'll tell you this: I wouldn't do the 2002 conversion again... the reason is this: with the 2 inputs on 2002 brakes, plumbing was a PITA and made bleeding terrible... if you've got a '70-72, I would just use the 320i brakes, unless you know a good machinist that can alter the 2002 calipers to 1 input... I couldn't find one here that would... safety concerns. :|
