lifters how to tell what I got
Should be an easy question but want to make sure. the engine is a 70 1.7L with the FI. Is there a way to identify hydraulic or solid without pulling the valve train apart?
Should I see no lash and be able to compress the rocker arm against the lifter? or have .006 lash and no compression of lifter. |

If you have a tapered steel pushrod, negative lash and rocker spacers with 2 wavy spring washers instead of a single longer spring between the rockers- its hydro...
If its solid it'll have aluminum pushrods.

Chromolly pushrods and the rocker spacers are also sometimes sold as "upgrades" to solid-lifter motors. So they are not an absolute proof--but they are strong indicators. The only way to be completely certain is to pull out the lifters and check them.
However, with 0.006" of valve lash I think it's safe to say they're solid lifters--particularly if they do have the spring between the rocker arms and the fatter aluminum pushrods. --DD

cool sounds easy enough. Just came to mind when SILVER had to abort his trip because of the valves getting tight.
