such as the BMW 320 front brake upgrade, is there something for the rear calipers. I just don't want to give AA $300.00 for rebuilt ones.

Don't. Rebuild them yourself using the kit from Pelican. It's not difficult. There's even a tech article to guide you.
The only other rear caliper setups that don't force you to lose your handbrake are 914-6 rear calipers (not a lot different, but more expensive), and 911 rear calipers with rotors and the drum handbrake, which requires converting to 5-lugs, so new wheels, so MUCH more expensive. |

Found old article
Thanks for the quick reply and advice. Mine are not rebuildable the pistons are rust pitted and I broke the cogs inside.
Never thought to check the local parts houses. Auto Zone has them unloaded for 63.99 each. Advanced Auto for 135.00 loaded and 94.00 unloaded. Less than AA unloaded!! |

I would be very unlikely that these fit I think. At least you would not have to pay shipping, and you could actually look at 'em before (OK with AAmaybe right after) you pay. They have had various parts "in stock" at AZ for my car, but they were not right. I guess they were bus parts or 412 parts maybe.

I think BMWs would fit on the rear but may require milling off the flanges, like done for on the front (except early 914 models). Could upset brake balance on the rears unless you've upgraded the fronts and changed the proportioning valve, as well as changed to 19mm master cylinder. These are my thoughts and I could be wrong.

Rice,
Why not use a set of 914 front calipers on the rear? They fit without modifications. Phil |

would 320i's be overkill on the rear of the car? we already have a spare pair to use, and the machining isnt really a problem (free use of a cnc machine anytime i want)
so, should i even bother then? the car is mostly going to be used as a weekend car. perhaps occasionally used during the weekdays. it will probably never see track time, although it is possible. my father and i have awalys wanted to track the 914 but we never got around to it with his car, or my old 914. so should we even bother? we have the parts, it wont cost any money. we also have spare front calipers as well so using those wont cost any money either. we have steel brake lines and fitting, as well as a line bender and flaring tool, so i can make adapters for either calipers with no money involved. so what say you guys. should we run the 320's or the stock fronts in the rear? p.s we have dot approved stainless lines all the way around. |

also, isnt the stock porp valve adustable? i saw some tech article saying that it has a screw and locknut that is used to adjust it?
if it is adjstable, could this be used instead of the aftermarket one we have? or is the aftermarket brakes beyind the adjustable limits of the stock prop valve? we can use the aftermarket racing one, but it is new in the box and my father would rather ebay it and use the stock one if possible. thanks. |

The stock one has a large spring in it. It will always help the pedal to feel "spongey". The aftermarket one should not.

AZ lists the rear calipers but does not have them in the whse or on order. Same with Advanced Auto but the guy is checking with them to see if they can be special ordered.
On another note I found some guys on the 914fan club list talking about an order for ebrakes. Anyone know what they are talking about? |
