Bosch makes the grease to use. I've got a tube of it. Brown, very sticky, doesn't flow off the cam when it gets hot. Get some.

Back in 1999 the distributor points in my 2.4L-6 started failing within 1000-2000 miles. The rubbing blocks were wearing out fast, causing the point gap to decrease to nothing (or was that open so wide that the point contacts never touched each other? Its been awhile.). This caused the car to stall while driving and to be hard to start at times. Not good when travelling 70-80 mph on California freeways. The weird thing was the car would die, but would re-start after a few minutes and run fine for a bit.
This was one of those times where I originally blamed the Permatune CD unit only to be proven wrong (again). After a bit of trouble-shooting I determined the CD was fine and the distributor point gap was way out of adjustment. I adjusted the points gap, and the 914 ran fine for about a month, then stalled again. The points were again out of adjustment. I talked to a Porsche mechanic in 1999 about the points and he informed me that he was seeing numerous Bosch points wearing out prematurely due to some change in the rubbing block. It was an epidemic. So I purchased/installed a Perlux Ignitor to replace the points and haven't had a spark problem since.

i am getting ready to add a pertronix to a friends 914 because after reading about the weird timing procedure you have to go through, i don't ever want to mess with it again because of points. valve adjustment will be a lot of fun i'm sure!
