can you remove an alternator on a 914-6 without dropping the engine?
well.....is it possible to remove it without pulling the motor out?
what are the pitfalls of doing it this way?

Yes, it can be done.
It's not easy though... Carbs/fuel injection must be removed, fan shroud, etc.. It's almost easier to just drop the motor, which really isnt all that hard to begin with... |

Yup, that's my understanding as well. You can do it, but it's actually easier to just pull the engine.

.......i guess i am just wondering because i need to pull the shroud and everything off anyways in order to make sure i have my alternator wired properly. the car is running great, but for some reason the idiot light is on on the dash, and i am thinking that i may have forgotten to hook up a ground. i don't know, but i am just going to go through the back as i am ill equipped jack wise to drop this motor again!!! anyone have a nice picture/diagram of the back of a 914-6 alternator showing the wiring???

I've pulled mine off without taking the carbs or the scroud off. It's tite but it can be done and I thought it was faster then pulling the engine and trans. It's just a pain in the ASS.

Dear God...Pull the engine man. I don't think I'd be able to forgive myself if I tried something like that.

There are no 914/6 wiring diagrams....use the 911 diagram from 1969 and the 914-4 from 1970 and "guess" the rest. The color 914/6 diagram out there is OK, but it is not perfect.

There is a factory 914-6 wiring diagram. We have a copy of it in the Electrical Diagrams section of this very website. Frankly, it kinda sucks. But that's what there is.
A man named Art Zapf (whose email used to be zipsix (at) earthlink (dot-net) ) sells colored Six wiring diagrams that he made himself. He has a website somewhere, but I haven't tried to find it in a couple of years. This is the diagram that Red-Beard refers to, I believe. --DD
