Question '73 914 2.0L Relay Board questions

Hi fellow 914ers,

I've been working on electrical/voltage problems on my 914 for some time now and had an opportunity this weekend to try another relay board from my parts car.

As I was disconnecting the connectors and relays off of the board, I noticed a set of unused receptacles. A quick check of my Haynes manual indicated that the receptacles are for a "GOVERNOR". So, what the heck is a governor, what does it do, where is it located, and why is my governor connector missing on my 914?

I looked in my parts 914 and found this connector, but haven't traced the wire to see where it ends.

One other question regarding the relay board... what are the amp ratings for the two fuses found on the board?

TIA, enjoy the sun!

FYI:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/parts/Electrical/914_electric_73E.jpg

IIRC, the fuse ratings are 25 and 8 amps. Both are shown on the diagram. The site also has the wiring diagram for your car, it's fairly easy to trace back the connections to the relay board.

BTW, the "Governor" is your voltage regulator. The only way that this connector is unused is if you or your PO has replaced your stock alternator with an alternator that has a built-in regulator.

Actually, I was probably looking at the diagram the wrong way around. I do have a voltage regulator. The unused receptacles are on the other side of the relay board (left, whereas the voltage regulator is on the right).

Any ideas what it's for?

Andrew,

Use the URL I provided above and match it against your relay board - it shows what you are looking for.

Actually, I was wondering the same thing. I have that same diagram and It doesnt say what that is either. The connector in question has three poles in the front left of the relay board. My 73 2.0 had a wire attached to it but my 75 2.0 had no wire even present. I, too, did not trace the wire to find out what it is but I have been wondering what it is for. On the linked diagram, it would be the yellow/red wire and the green wire jutting out from the top near the "90". Brian

The connector is for the rear window defogger, and only uses two of the three poles.

Studying the diagram, when the yellow/red wire is energized it will flip relay #52 (for the Rear Window Defogger). This will in turn energize the green wire with power coming from the #91 25A fuse.

So the yellow/red would come from the defogger switch w/+12V, and the green would go too the rear window defogger v/+12V.

Thanks! That explains it all! My daily driver 2.0L does not have rear defogging whereas my 1.7L parts car does!

Tim, you're the man!

Question about relay boards.

I found the answer to a problem with my #3 cyl. not working. I switched injector wires and the cyl. was fine. So being electrical, would a dry/ brittle 38 yr. old board possibly cause this problem ?

Thanks....
