Question What's the rarest color the 73 914/4 came in?

Just as the subject says... what's the rarest color Porsche put on the 1973 914/4?

Probably Viper Green Metallic, L96N.

That color was only offered in 1976 and the fewest #s of 914's were made that year of any year, that would be my guess.

Dont't forget "paint to sample". I know of one Aubergine car (originally, now a slightly different shade of dark purple) and two Sepia Brown cars. Both were 911 colors that people wanted for their 914s. I'm sure there were other one-offs as well.

My 73 was paint to match as well. It is pretty close to the 911 sepia brown although, it is a little more milk chocolate in its depth (If that Makes sense

What a deal "paint to order" was back then.
Only $136 extra!

The 914 I have was originally painted a light blue. Almost a baby blue. I've never ever seen another 914 that was originally painted that color.

Any ideas?

If it is a '73 or '74 it might be "olympic blue". Check the drivers door jamb for this paint code -- L51P.

It's a 73 914/4. Is Olympic Blue a pretty rare color?

Thanks,
Tom

We may be stumped as to how to answer your question...what do you mean by 'rare'?

The fewest #cars painted...

...in a stock color offered and produced by Porsche?

...in a one of a kind (paint to match) color by Porsche? (obviously rare)

...in a given color that are still on the road? (depends on how a given color survives rust/accidents/race abuse)

...how about the preproduction factory 914 cars, I think they were one of a kind colors. (always liked the Piech car, kind of a platinum-goldish color)

...the later cars (75-76) used VW colors...same as other Vdubs (rare on a 914 or just a rare color?)

...olympic blue while not often seen, is not that rare, but rarer than say signal orange or light ivory.

One would need the factory production records to verify the # of cars produced in a given color to determine 'rarest'.

Viper Green I have 3 2.0 1974's L96N (viper green) But the color is listed as Delphi Green, I call it HOT WHEELS Green only one that has not been resprayed in another color the other 2 are red. 2 of my cars a 1970 and a 1972 are L96N but were respayed in Blue ( yuk) and white ( to plain for me). I was suprsed to have so many in that color.
Jeff how many were made? is there a site that would contain # or car made in each color? how many Sliver 1973 2.0 914 were made? This is my personal 914 with all the good stuff, A-C,factory swaybars,App group,Fuchs ect.
My L13K car is in super condition but I will never sell my Sliver car as it was sold on my Sixteenth Brithday. Steve

Don't know Stever.

According to the chuxter link above Delphi Green Metalic is L99A...could be the chuxter is wrong...I didn't cross confirm it with other sources. If you have several early cars with that color tag, his list must be in error.

The old Renegade site had a list of #cars produced in each year, but thats gone now...I have a hard copy but I'd have to find it. I haven't seen any literature on how many cars of each color were produced by the factory so I don't know how many silver cars were made in '73. Silver is a great color though.

If I recall correctly, for 1973 model 914's, there were over +20,000 cars made and in 1976 there were only 2-3,000 cars total...all 2.0L. But of those numbers, not all were imported to the US, only about 80% according to a couple of sources.

Another rare color not listed is pink! One of these was in a local junkyard, in fact I got the trannie out of in. I have also heard that some pink cars were sent to Hawaii, anyone else heard or seen this color??
