Transmission oil change.

I have a 1975 1.8. I am planning on changing the oil in my transmission. When I was looking into what I need and what it will cost, I was given three different choices as to what my car should have. Exactly what type and weight oil does my transmission take. Also, about how much.

90-weight gear oil, about 2 1/2 quarts. I prefer Swepco 201, and it is recommended by a number of pro mechanics I know. That seems to be the most-common recommendation.

There is also one school of thought that any decent 90-weight non-synthetic is fine.

A few people feel that various synthetics (e.g., Mobil 1 gear oil or Redline MTL) are the best, but more people feel that synthetics do not let the synchros work correctly.

(Disclaimer: Pelican sells Swepco. But I've believed in it before I worked there.)

Before you open the drain plug, remove the fill plug first to make sure it can be refilled. Snapon tool trucks carry the right sized tool to pull the plugs and it is only a few $$$$.

Any good gear oil is better than what is usually in the gear box...i.e. none.

You all know my feelings on Swepco so I won't go there...

Jake Raby and I run Synthetic.

Just did mine on Friday. 17 mm hex socket. Used Castrol Syntec 75w-90. Ordered another drain/fill plug from pelican because the PO had put some "Other" kind of plug in. Everything went fine. A noticeable improvement in the shifting. Not sure what was in it before, but the Castrol Syntec made quite a difference. I agree on the Swepco also, I just needed to get it done and figured I try the Castrol. Next time I'll get the Swepco.
