The GT Mechanical Headlight Kit is now fully installed and operational. I will be adding some comments and notes on some of the above photos when I find more time. For now, I'll end this section of the build with a short video clip of the Strahle 914-6 GT at the 2011 Arosa Classic event. Enjoy and GN! Can you post a movie of the headlights operating? I am having trouble seeing how the mechanism would work.
--DD |
So when you want to put the lights down your pit crew needs to push them down then?

GT Mech Headlight Movie Clip...
That's a good idea Dave, I'll have to do that sometime. The system is not currently installed in the car, partially apart because we were working on the car and one of the shocks failed (pull-handle and cables removed, so is one side completely).
BTW, one can't use 'new' pneumatic shocks, those are too strong and can damage the bulbs/lamps. The new shocks really slams the light assemblies when deployed. Used shocks are much easier on the mechanism, but the trick is to get two shocks that behave the same way. Normally, one side will open a bit slower than the other when this happens. Yes, once the lights are released, one has to get out of the car to push them back down. A- |
You need to dampen the action somehow. Insert friction somewhere into the system.

Give me friction!!!!

To keep the GT project as faithful to the originals as possible, I would just try and find two used shocks that are very similar in the valving to each other. These were 'race cars' so being perfect in this area was not that important. As a matter of fact, all the drivers really cared about was that the headlamp assemblies worked when they needed them. If you do come up with a good idea that does not change the original GT system much, "I'm Ross Perot!" (all ears). :D |
I am not familiar with all the tiny details of the headlight assembly but the best way for you (least visible) probably would be to slip some steel washers into the pivot point for the headlight bucket. If you have a bolt on the outside that you can it tighten down more than spec and do that with the washers behind them, basically acting like a limited slip differential. If you epoxy one washer to the headlight bucket and one to the frame then you would make sure that the only friction is between the sacrificial washers. Should not take a whole lot of force.
|
Or you could even better yet do something similar with the pivot for the non-original strut.
|
The best performing thing would be to find a minature coil spring mounted over a damper, maybe you could find such a thing in a hardware store.
But that would not look like the other GTs. But your car does not have the hack job for slots either. :) |
I'll just live with having to service those failing shocks just like the others.
I truly don't want to make any changes to the design, but I do want to thank you for the suggestions though... ; ) |
914-6 GT Windshield Reinforcements
Next in line in this project is the fabrication and installation of the windshield pillar reinforcements. Have you ever seen a 914 with a cracked windshield? Probably so!
Here is what we did to this section of the 914-6, I'll show you with about 149 photos  Again, I'll start with a photo of the factory 914-6 GT we selected to emulate, the #2 Nurburgring Porsche 914-6 GT, sn 914.043.2542. For more photos of this GT, go here The Nurburgring #2 Porsche 914-6 GT S-W 1948 - sn 914.043.2542 Photo Gallery by 914-6 GT at pbase.com http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322110060.jpg ...this is a photograph of the reinforced pillar, same 914-6 GT as above http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322110096.jpg ...and here are the photos showing the start of this section of the project. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322110234.jpg I shall return in a bit...
