Flash-Forward Photo to today...
Thank you for the market value quotes Marco and Matt. The reason I asked is because I located a NOS 904 mainshaft for only $750.
I better run off to the bank tomorrow and don't let that one get away. :D I'm a bit tired tonight, so I'll just post a couple of current photos for now. It will be an update to my post #72 photo. You can see the rest of the sequence starting here DSC05942.jpg photo - 914-6 GT photos at pbase.com I'm speechless, don't know what to say... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318055500.jpg PS: Keep in mind we are NOT quite done yet, two more days, maybe Monday and we can all see the final results, top and bottom! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318084322.jpg |
BEHR Front Oil Cooler Installation
Okay, now back to where we left off earlier. Next is the installation of the BEHR factory 914-6 GT front oil cooler, here are some photos...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318267812.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318267826.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318104384.jpg This photo shows the large opening cut-out needed for the BEHR front mounted oil cooler. The bulkhead was also cut, but I don't have any photos of that process. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318104396.jpg ...but before we continue with the installation, I need to show you the excellent reproductions that Mark Allin (Rare Drive, Inc., previously "Precision Automotive Restorations) had custom made for me (Thanks Mark Allin!). Unfortunately, there is a sad story behind these parts and I will share it with you. The gentleman that Mark Allin used to fabricate the following two reproduction pieces, shortly after he finished and delivered them, was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident. I will never forget it, may he continue to rest in peace... Below is a side-by-side comparison of his remarkable work. The original parts are the ones painted Black. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318104549.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318104564.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318104585.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318104601.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318104616.jpg ...below are close up photos after the parts arrived. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318104472.jpg |

We first have to check these parts for proper fitment and probably make some adjustments along the way.

Front Oil Cooler Support Reinforcement
Because the 914-6 GT uses two rather large cut-outs at the front end between the torsion bars, it is important to try and restore some of the chassis rigidity that was potentially lost. There is one large opening required for the BEHR front oil cooler, and yet another at the bottom of the floor pan to allow the air flow to escape coming through the metal ducting of the oil cooler. The following photo sequence is a bit detailed, but I don't want anyone to miss a step of what we're about to do in this section of the front end to reinforce it. Let's take a look... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122530.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122544.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122557.jpg That's 1/8 inch plate being welded under the square reinforcement tubing. The thicker plate adds additional rigidity to this critical area. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122567.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122579.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122600.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122614.jpg Watch carefully what will take place next, a "David Copperfield" magic act! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122626.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122668.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122680.jpg |

By now, I think you understand why I feel so fortunate to have a guy like Mark Spraker working on my car. IMHO, the quality of fabrication and workmanship in this GT project is simply second to none... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318123239.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318123250.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318123298.jpg |

This photo makes it easier to understand why we went through all this much trouble.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318122988.jpg Additionally, once the front oil cooler bottom support is welded in place, it really makes the front end of this 914 very, very solid. :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318123311.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318123354.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318123363.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318123375.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318123384.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318123583.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318123418.jpg SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!!! 914-6 GT Front Oil Cooler Protective Screen - Reproduction
I would like to also show you the reproduction photos of the 914-6 GT Front Oil Cooler Protective Screen that we fabricated. I actually have all these factory original (NOS) 914-6 GT parts so the reproduction was not actually made for me, but rather, for Sean Colon. I'm sure you will be as impressed with the results as Sean and I were.
BTW, in case you're wondering, we're not fabricating any more screens and the tooling is unfortunately no longer available. It was water damaged in my garage and I had to discard it. :( http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318132614.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318132628.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318132648.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318132661.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318132678.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318133412.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318133502.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318133010.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318133028.jpg |

I just can't believe how many NOS and real factory prototype (906-917) racing parts you can find. Especially the ones made from Magnesium that want to return to the earth from which they came. Are you using the 917/30 oil cooler?
