http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1330112106.jpg Checking measurements to insure the upper rails are not only parallel to each other, but also spaced correctly so that they can slide front-to-back easily when the seat assembly is mated to the lower rails. Any misalignment here will definitely create a binding mechanism. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329771447.jpg I can't stress enough how important it is to have the correct rail alignment prior to permanently welding the two rear seat rail support brackets. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329771472.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329771483.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329771497.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329771509.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329771523.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329771539.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329771552.jpg ...and the finished product, primered and ready for paint. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329772214.jpg |
The 914-6 GT Rally Hand-Brake Modification
As I've done before, I'll start this section of the project with a few sample photos of how the Porsche factory relocated and modified the parking lever mechanism for the Rally cars. Take a look...
1970 Porsche sn 914.043.1948 and more detailed photos of the GT can be found here http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773360.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773371.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773382.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773394.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773410.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773424.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773435.jpg The rather large diameter cable in the photos below actuates a modified 'drum-brake' mechanism that was incorporated at the rear hubs of the 914-6. Unfortunately, I don't have any other detailed photos of the 911-type drum brake setup in the 914-6 GT rally cars. If by chance you know anyone that can contribute photos of this section of the GT, please email them to me at ajserrano @ msn dot com. Unknown 914-6 GT interior photo...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1330112561.jpg ...Here are two more photos of the same factory built 914-6 GT as shown on previous post. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773619.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773630.jpg The following photos were provided by Wilco of Germany. Wilco Halves modified the rear trailing arms of a 914 to accept the 911 drum type brake mechanism. I believe the Porsche factory implement a similar installation in their Rally prepared 914-6 GT race cars, but I have yet to confirm details of the installation. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329777687.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329777703.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329777715.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329777733.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329777746.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329777757.jpg |

A few sample photos of yet another very famous Porsche factory built 914-6 GT rally car. For more detailed photos of this particular GT, go here
Armin Knüpfing of Knüpfing Motorsport (sitting closes to the 914-6 GT) is the individual responsible for the very accurate and recent restoration of this vehicle. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773845.jpg Top view of the relocated purposely modified GT rally hand-brake mechanism. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329773858.jpg ...and the following are photos of the bear chassis while the GT was being restored, it shows this section in greater detail. I see a problem with your build.
Your quality and craftsmanship is much much better than the factory ! I think you need to dull your tools and hurry up and be much more sloppy to be more true to the factory work. Ha ha ! Very impressive build ! |
Quality Control Dial...
Hello Pete. You're so right, the Porsche factory, at that time, never really cared or meant to work on their race cars at this quality level.
Having said that, production cars are a whole different story, where workmanship always shines. ;) I joked around with Mark (the guy responsible for all the fabrication work and talent) threatening him with the installation of some sort of "dial-implant" where one would have some level of "quality control". Using the dial, I could back him off a bit on certain areas of the project where I don't want things to look so perfect. Trust me, I'm by no means complaining... :D Thanks for the post! Upcoming New 911 RSR DVD Release...
Here is a short video trailer of an upcoming 911 RSR DVD release.
I have a longer version but not allowed to post it anywhere... Check it out! <iframe width="1280" height="720" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ot141OeFZRw?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> ...and a link to both the White 73' RSR and the Brown 74' RSR |
Will there be any actual racing/laps driven in anger or just the studio shots and the staged drive-by/car-to-car shots?
|
I haven't seen the entire DVD yet, but I do know Derek Bell and several other well known figures narrate the history of the 911 RSR. From what I saw, it was very well done and captivating, I'll have to check on the release, maybe it already has...

This is one of several photos I received from Mr. Mark T. Russell. Here is what Mark Rusell had to say...
Armando, Here are some pictures of a 914/6 GT that my brother raced in 1971. In Daytona the #19 car was driven by Steve Behr, John Buffum and Irwin Kremer. It finished 8th over all and 2nd in GT. It was a two car effort. The #18 car was not a factory GT car. They ran at Sebring March of 71 now #29 but did not finish. There it was, driven by Charles (Pete) Conrad with Behr and Buffum. Pete Conrad commanded Apollo 12 and was the 3rd man to walk on the moon. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1330113923.jpg With these many detailed photos, anyone can certainly try and give this modification a try. Here is a photo from Wilfried Geerts he sent me in December, 2004. Subject: 914/6 GT at Spa 1971
Hello, VERY NICE your 914-6 GT site! As a real Porsche lover, I can only say "SUPERRRRRRRR". I love the Porsches prior to 1974, and most of all, the 911 GR4 and RS, RSR cars! I have a lot of pictures in my collection and I sending you a never published picture taken at the 1971 Spa (1000 km) event. Regards from Belgium!
