Question 1.7 & 2.0 engine rebuilders

I have a 73" 1.7L and a 74' 2.0L that need engine rebuilding and I am looking for someone in the Mississippi region (Deep South) to do it. I want to personally deliver the engines and review them with someone and make cost effective decisions on what to do and not to do. I want to stay original.

Okay, I am gonna be the first to say it.... Raby's Aircooled Technology. He is the resident Type IV guru. He is in Georgia....North Georgia. I am in Florida and took a pilgrimage to his shop. He does nice work. He does stock but it is hard to pass up the sound of the 2270. Anyway, www.aircooledtechnology.com good luck and let us know what you end up doing!!!

Another possibility to consider, if you don't mind travelling:

Brad Mayeur at 914 Limited, in East Peoria IL. veldiadv@midwest.net

You might check with Perry Keihl at 914 Network a914man@netease.net in Parsons TN. He's mostly into 6 conversion stuff, but if he indeed does do the four-cylinder engine builds they should be good quality.

Raby, of course.

I haven't heard of anyone in the MS area, though since I'm in CA that isn't saying all that much...

Get jake raby's video and do it yourself. You'll only save about two grand. Its pretty basic. I just finished my 3rd T-IV. Good luck!

BenI,
What about Fisher's Buggies. As I live in Tampa and have used them before, I wanted to know your story.

Yes, we do stock engines too. Our engines really are not "Rebuilt" they are mostly new, with only a few parts reused, after inspection and machining.

The video we have will save you some money, but if you do something wrong, you will find out and you will have to repair it. The warranty we offer is not comparable with anyone elses, one year unlimited miles, no fault. This is for any engine to 2270cc.

We don't mass produce any engine, not even stock. We would like to get YOUR engine a0nd USE YOUR ENGINE for the new engine. This way there are no core charges, no hassles, and you get yoyur old engine back like new, and 100% complete and dyno tuned! The shipping to us is less than half what the core charges could be otherwise.

I have bought many parts from Brad Mayeur from 914 Limited and have been pleased on everything. He is a trustworthy person. You can call him on any tech question.
I bought a driver seat from him. When I went to install it around 9-12 months later I found out I needed the passenger seat instead. Called Brad and he was willing to refund my money for the seat that I bought and send me a different one no questions asked.
He would be my first call.

Thumbs up

I hate to admit this in front of all you youngsters, but I've had 914s on and off since 1976. ;-)

I know nobody of higher personal integrity or 914 knowledge than Brad Mayeur. Especially if you want stock or close to it, I can't imagine a better choice. Easy trip from MS to central IL.

Thumbs up 914 engine rebuild

Just got my 2.0 back from Raby's. Looks great! Jake was very good to work with and completed it on time and on budget. Liked the tech manual he provided with the engine. Seems to really know his stuff. I hope to install in the next 30-60 days as soon as I am finished with the "down to the bone" restore I am doing. I will update further on this when I have itinstalled and running.

building my own is a wonderful fantasy. but buying the dial indicators, cc the heads. setting the deck heigth, worring about the oil pump, end play. and on and on.and the lack of sleep worring about everything being just so. that 1 year warranty,i think if a person drives the car seriously and regularly for ten months you know if it is going to last. a drive from wa to ga for
for those valve adj and oil changes.

If a solid day of dyno tuning won't break it, it can't be broken in a year....There is no way the car will put that amount of stress on the engine...

Worrying is a factor that comes with the job, it's not as bad as my turbine engine days, wondering if something was gonna fall ot of the sky...Every day I had 40 to 50 lives in my hands, it REALLY sucked!
