I used a harness bar to mount the shoulder belts. That was legal for my local club at the time; I am not sure if it is now.

The preferred method is to mount to either the firewall (using large washers and/or backing plates), or to a bar across the roll bar. I mean an add-on welded-in roll bar by that, BTW.

Make sure you have a seat that has the proper reinforced holes for the belts. Many clubs require that if you use non-stock belts.

The lap belts can be attached to the stock mounting points. I used forged eyebolts and clipped the belts to them. The bolts went through the stock seatbelt attachments so I had both available. The one threaded into the center tunnel had to be cut short, because it interfered with the wires and tubes inside the tunnel otherwise.

The sub strap in my car was a dual one, two straps down from the buckle instead of one. Those went under my legs so I was sitting on them. They attached to the lap belt mounting points. That may very well not be legal in some clubs. A single sub strap must go through the seat to the floor pan, with large backing plates and/or washers. Often the hole where this strap goes must be designed into the seat to begin with.

Some clubs used to allow the sub strap to go around the front of the seat. I think that is a Very Bad Idea, because it tends to turn the buckle into your gut, which can do an astonishing amount of damage.

In general, it's best to have a racing sat with holes designed in it for the belts. The belts should be attached to solid mounting points with generous backing plates. They might need to go over a harness bar to keep the right geometry, depending on your seating position.

Adding to Dave's very good response: check with the local club you are going to run with and see what their rules are regarding (non-factory) seat belt mounting. Some clubs are very specific on where/how aftermarket belts are installed. Some have their rules posted online, and I think some even have some reference drawings. Best to do some research before you mount them and get to a tech inspection.
