RE: Installing right side mirror
Am buying a 914 race car that does not have an outside right/passenger door mounted mirror
How hard is it to mount one (factory)on the door? Did one on my 77 911 and involved a fair amount of work installing a mounting plate inside the door first |

The real work is taking the door panel off the inside of the door. Once you do that, you'll find that weld-nuts are already in place for mounting another stock mirror on the door.
Usually, you take a pin punch (or better yet a spring-loaded punch) and go out through the nut to give you a dimple to drill into. You then go back outside, use another punch to push the dimple inward so the drill doesn't chatter off of the center mark. Then drill with successively larger bits until you get a hole just big enough for the M6 screws. And not deep enough to trash the threads in the weld-nut. The bad news is that the vertical bar at the back of the triangle window at the front of the door may very well block most of the mirror from your line of sight. Putting a mirror elsewhere on the door involves adding the backing plate yourself. You can probably weld one up and glue (epoxy?) it to the inside of the door skin; the mounting screws should hold it on pretty securely once they are screwed in. --DD

I installed one on my car using the same technique Dave referenced and it worked great!
