Reconnecting Distributor

Last summer I overhauled the engine on my '72 914-4. I cannot recall how to connect the distributor. Which wire goes were?

If its the spark plug wires, the firing order is 1-4-3-2. Look at the adjusting valves tech article for info on how to move the engine to TDC. The rotor should be pointing at #1. Key word 'should'. Coudld be #3 If its the green(or whatever color yours is) wire from inside the distrubutor, that goes to the negative terminal of the coil.

I find the easiest way to remember the plug wires is this: The wires going to the right side of the car are on the right side of the distributor in its normal orientation. The forward one goes to the forward plug, and the rear one goes to the rear plug.

On the left side, the forward contact on the distributor goes to the REAR spark plug, while the rear distributor contact goes to the FRONT plug.

"Right is right and left is swapped."

I also drew a picture while looking at a friend's 914--that helped a lot the first time I forgot where the wires went.
