Looking for a source for 914-6 Heat Exchangers for my 83 yr old Mother!
I know these are getting rare but I need a pair of stock 914-6 Heat Exchanger type headers for my 83 year old mother's 914! (that she still drives!)
2 weeks ago her 74 2.0L 4 cyl. seized so it's time to install the 2.0L Six that's sitting on an engine stand ready to go. We have all the parts with the exception of the oil tank and the factory exhaust. I'd put headers on it but she plans to continue to drive it so it will need heat & defrost capability. The BB units are a last resort as they are very expensive. She has a limited budget for the conversion so $2400 for BB headers are not in the cards. The tube size is a bit large as well for the 2.0L. Does anyone out there have any idea where to find a pair of stock 914-6 Heat Exchanger headers? Is there anyone else besides BB that's selling stock style 914-6 Heat Exchangers? HELP! The stock ones don't really cost much if any less than the Billy Boat ones. But the stock ones fit, unlike the B&B. They also rust, unlike the B&B ones. But I think actually fitting on the car is a little more important...
You may be able to get someone to fabricate some exchanger wrapping around a set of headers. The factory exchangers look kind of like a set of headers with the wrapping added on anyway. A good fabricator should be able to set you up. You would probably want to drive the car to them to get a good design for them; maybe take a 911 exchanger or one of the four-banger exchangers with to give them the idea. --DD

You can proll'y source these by putting a WTB, want to buy, ad here on the pelican + 914world board.
I sold my last good/used set for $2,500.00 If you want extra life out of the HBs just get them metallic ceramic coated, Jethot or equivalent. Since the oe heater boxes were designed for the 2.0L six, the tube sizes are just right. Marty

Keep checking ebay and the want ads, they do come around occasionally. If found, have them checked carefully, ceramic coated, and carry a CO detector in the car as all these heat exchangers are getting old. Even the SSI four cylinder ones have had issues after all these years.
