I was just thinking about the (not too bad but bad enough) cylinder leakage I recently posted pictures of. Could the studs that connect them to the heads be coming loose? Is it a good idea on a high mileage engine to have these r&r'd?
One more question: New after market P&C's or cleanup the stock C's (if well in spec) and new P's and rings? I know Jake recommends using the stock C's because of superior cooling. I've decided to rebuild as close to stock as possible this time. I don't want to spend this much $$ on an experiment.

Did you have head gaskets in there when you pulled the motor down? If so, that is more likely the problem rather than the studs. Never hurts to check though. I sent you Email.

Yes, the head gasket was in there. It seemed to be leaking against the heads and case, that's why I thought about the case studs.

L&N carries a ARP "case hardware and stud" set. Not to clear what it includes and it isn't cheap, but I would think that ARP would be fine stuff.

The recommendation to reuse stock OEM cylinders is when going to larger bore 96 mm pistons. The common opinion is that the quality of aftermarket big bore cast iron cylinders is quite poor and that properly boring used OEM cylinders results in a better cylinder. I have not seen any discussions indicating superior cooling for OEM cast iron cylinders.
