arrrrrrrgh

So having fixed my fuel leak with a new check valve and seals, I drove about 100 incident free miles. Just now my fuel pump started making bad, loud noises. No other adverse symptoms (no stumbling). What gives?

I had one that got really loud, and it eventually gave out, sorry that really sucks! My only suggestion to you is that when you install a new or rebuilt one, to put a filter before the fuel pump. This keeps it from getting a bunch of junk from the tank in it. Easy to do, you can grab one at autozone for a few bucks.

Just to note, its not the standard fuel pump hum. Its quite a loud moaning, which can be felt (the vibes).

Mac- I assume you are referring to the pre-filter thingy?

I would just get a new fuel pump and hold onto it until this one craps out

OK- it MUST be bad

Started the car just now, it is stumbling really badly. When I hit the gas, it stumbles a lot, and I am getting nasty smoke from the pipe. SO, I guess I need a fuel pump.

Where should I buy it? The dealer quoted $309, so they are out. Pelican has it at ~$210, but it looks wrong because there's no rubber casing.

God hates me. I know it now.

and I almost forgot-

is this the correct part # for the pre-filter thingy?
928 201 187 02

Also- how can I change the pre-filter without draining the gas? I mean, to change the pump I can just clamp the gas hose, but the change the prefilter it looks bad....

rammstien, the prefilter i was refering to is not the same as your regular fuel filter, I was talking about an autozone part, you just cut the fuel line jsut past where it comes out of the tank and put in a filter, and use 2 clamps to hold it in. This keeps all the crap in your tank out of the fuel pump. but also replace the fuel filter while in there if you haven't. You will get some gas in the face, just be careful and de-pressureize the fuel system first, then use a clamp to clamp the line just outside of the tank.

I think I follow. I replaced my BIG fuel filter about 2 months ago.

There's also a filter behind the hose that goes from the tank to the pump.

oh okay, on my car there isn't a faactory one of those. If I were you I would either replace that or just go the autozone cheapo route. Someone else that has done this before should chime in. In my opinion it keeps the crud from your fuel tank out of the fuel pump, keeping it from failing so quickly.
