Rustproofing

I'm getting my sills replaced this week and want to rustproof them a well as possible. Por-15 seems to be a favourite can it be thinned and sprayed and will it take primer / anti-stone chip paint on top? Also how is the anti-chip orange peel effect best recreated?

Por-15 is the best stuff for rust-proofing, there are other epoxy-based paints, but from what I have heard, none of them come close to Por-15. It is just like any primer, you can put anything you want ontop of it.

The anti-chip orange peel is (I think) applied after the clear coat, on top of everything. At least that's what a body shop told me. Personally, I would apply the clear plastic film on top of the clear-coat. I've seen it on a lot of newer cars. It seems to hold up really well to the weather, but it doesn't turn all white when you wax it =) I just don't know what kind of plastic it is.

I might have got the wrong end of the stick with this but I think strath44 is referring to the rough paint right at the bottom of the car (under the doors) as opposed to those plastic strips that can be bought and stuck on. I'm not sure if they do this on the US models...?

I don't know how the rough (hammerite?) effect is created but I agree with Zero10 that the stick on things should be put over everything. my last 944 had been resprayed and the stick ons put underneath the clearcote which was great until they got old and chipped and I needed to replace them!

The stuff underneath the doors was (at least on my car) applied over the clear-coat. It hazes badly when waxed, so you really have to be careful with it. However, my car has been repainted 3 times in the past, so it's definately not original.

yes it was the rough - stuff that runs the length of the sills. Will spray por-15 on at the moment, then look for a suitable anti-chip paint - another forum reckons you need a schutz or schultz gun attachment for the compressor which spray the paint in that think pattern. Which is the best type of por-15 to get for this and a UK supplier (frost?).
