I received my newly rebuilt alt. today and tried it out.Still had to jump the car off cause the battery was dead.
Checking the volatge going to the battery I have 14.40 about 10mins and it droped and stayed around 14.38volts and I ran it about 30mins and it bounced around a bit it did drop to 14.28 a few times but as soon as I rev it up a little it went back to 14.38. This was using a voltage meter at the battery. Tommorow Im gona get my tags renewed and insurance back on it. Oh and replace the battery. Hopefully this corrected the voltage dropping problem I was getting. Question... What is the output supposed to be on the voltage going to the battery? I didnt know if this is correct. And is it supposed to drop anymore after awhile or stay in the area? Its been nice to here her run again after she sat on blocks for 6months ![]() Hopefully by this weekend I will be crusing the streets again.

Well it depends on if you have the stock alternator, voltage regulator, what sort of wiring you have and the current load.
If you are getting 14.4v at the battery that is really pretty good/high. Really unusual and I would suspect it is without many other loads and your voltage regulator is set up around 14.9 volts. The voltage dropping a bit after running for awhile is normal as the engine bay gets hot. For several reasons. A good voltage at the battery would be around 13.9/14 volts. Get too much higher than that and you will start to cook the battery and shorten its life. Get up to 15+ volts and you risk the damn thing exploding. But it sounds like you have a good charging system going now, but at the high end. |
