What type of engine is this??

I got this pic off of rennlist, Some masrati race car. AT first looks it seems to be a 4 cyl, I see it has 2 carbs and 4 intake runners (they could split inside the runner)
The thing that throws me off is what I believe to be the spark plug wires, there are 8 of them, so I was like maybe its got dual plugs, but at a closer look not all cylinders have 2 spark plugs, only the middle ones do. Also what are the chrome pipes that go into the head, I dont believe they are exhaust maybe some type of coolant of oil passages. Can some one please clear my head and help me figure out what is going on, maybe Im just stupid or maybe Im missing something. Any ideas??

It has eight plugs, hemi head and the plugs go in at an angle, therefore the gap between them. Think it looks a lot like the Maserati Birdcage type of engine. The chrome pipes are coolant pipes.

I'm seeing the same thing that fast sees. There appear to only be 6 plugs, 1 plug for cyl's 1 and 4, and 2 plugs for cyl's 2 and 3....

I see 8.

1 and 8 are alone.

2&3; 4&5; 6&7 are pairs and as Brit says 'go in at an angle'

Ah, I see it now..... What I was seeing were the pairs per cylender were together.... They are seperated, now I see 8.

They call it a twin plug motor from what I'm reading. MT4 Twin plug possibly.

Ok I zoomed in and Brit is correct, It seems like its a 4 cyl with 8 plugs, The plugs seem to be at the far ends of each cylinder and they do go in at angles. hmmm what a weird idea

Got it, I wonder what the displacment of that engine is, I mean whats the purpose of a dual plug unless you have a very large displacment engine or a very dense mixture, right??

I'd say that is at least a 3.0L motor given the fact that it is being feed by no less than 48mm DCOE Webers, might even be 50's.

displacement doesnt constitute the dual plugs, you can get a more efficient burn off of any sized engine with dual ignition (1.8L and 2.0L '86 nissan 200sx -RIP-)

Dual plugs are also used for higher compression engines...like some of the 911's

IT looks like it may be a modified version of one of the engines on this page:
http://homepages.tesco.net/~enrico/image/home11.htm

This page has more of their engines, but bigger displacement ones:
http://homepages.tesco.net/~enrico/image/home12.htm

Maybe This:
ENGINE TIPO 4CF2

Year of production: 1952-1953
Straight 4-cyl 1994.9 cc engine
DOHC with four valves per cylinder
Bore 88mm and stroke 82mm
Compression ratio 12.0:1/13.5:1
Power output 182/195bhp @ 7000/7500 rpm
Induction system by two Weber DBO carburettors
Later by direct fuel injection.

or THis:
ENGINE TIPO 60

Years of production: 1959-1960
Straight 4-cyl 1990.2 cc engine
DOHC with two valves per cylinder
Bore 93.8mm and stroke 72mm
Compression ratio 9.8:1
Power output 200bhp @ 7800 rpm
Induction system by No 2 Weber 45 DC03 carburettors.

Pretty nice. 2 liters, two valves, no turbo, and 200 hp. Of course, you have to wonder if that's gross power, not SAE net. Still, it makes more power than the 944 engine, with less displacement

I'll bet that it doesn't last nearly as long either.

Comparing a racing engine to a street engine doesn't work so well.

Both of those engines flow more and have higher compression ratios, thats why there is more HP
