Running without throttle switch?

Guys, I've just done the top end in my 83 944. The car seems to run better without the throttle switch plugged in. It idles better, anyway - finally got a fast and regular idle. Until I hook up the throttle switch - which was installed a while back by a reputable shop and calibrated by them.

'Sup? Will running the car without the switch do any harm? If not, I'm just gonna unplug it and leave it.

I realize it sends closed, part and wide-open throttle position indication to the DME, but isn't some of that redundant considering what the AFM does?

Not redundant at all.
The AFM is used for fuel metering. The TPS on your 83 will have idle, and WOT contacts, there is no part-throttle variable resistor like there is in other models/vehicles. So, it tells the DME when you're really stomping on it, so it can advance timing, and all the other little goodies that the AFM can't, as well as it tells the DME when to lean things out for idle (keep in mind idle AFR's can get pretty lean). Also, the TPS tells the DME when to use the idle stabilizer.

If it runs better with the TPS unhooked, the first thing you should do is check out the instructiosn on Clark's garage on how to check/adjust your TPS, and if it's no good, replace it.

Thanx Zero - will check this weekend. I've got a spare switch I can swap in.

However, I still wonder if any harm can come not using the TPS.

Yes. Full throttle lean-out. The AFM is calibrated for part-throttle loads and the DME depends on the WOT signal from the TPS to trigger WOT enrichment.
