Project Update - Part III

Part II

So........ The engine is now ready.............

JustinL and I managed to crank the car over...... We pulled the fuse on the fuel pump and cranked the car to ensure all systems were powering and MS was seeing all the sensors.....

It looks like the EDIS triggering setup works. We are receiving a PIP signal ....thus the VR sensor is picking up the pulses. Hoooray.

No wires melted so the newly created harness is working.

We fired up the MS and brought up the real time display and everything was checking out.

The only problem was that EDIS was not communicating with Megasquirt. SOOO we are pulling out the MS assembly troubleshooting to make sure everything was setup properly on it. We will probably fire it up this weekend!

Here is where we are now....

Things remaining......

- vaccum line to go to the Megasquirt and t-ing to the boost guage
- ordered a new set of high resistance 55 lb injectors. (P.S siemen 55lb for sale now with resistor pack) if anyone is looking for a set
- found my wideband display finally!!!!

All systems are go.

Holy Lindsay Racing, Batman.

I admire this project. And I'm not just buttering you up because I might need help with the 951 engine I may be buying...

I just re-acclimated myself with your project, looking over your past two threads. This is very similar to what I hope to accomplish.

Not to hijack your thread, but...

Basically I will PROBABLY have a 86 951 motor, going into a 83 944. While I build the engine, I will still be driving my 944 with its NA engine. Once the engine is built, I will do the swap and sell my NA engine.

I am still unsure of what I might upgrade. The engine is a full longblock from oil pan to cam tower, including the head. Not included is the intake manifold, the turbo, the oil cooler, and wiring. I will definitely replace belts, just to be on the safe side. I know that used intakes can be found for cheap... unless I am talked into getting the upgraded Lindsey unit.

Turbos? I haven't even given much thought to this yet; I want to get the engine before I get into details.

The big hurdle for me might be the wiring harnesses. I know zip about electronics.

Great project, Alex. At least now I know it can be done. I'll point the finger at you as soon as the purists start screaming "JUST BUY A 951!"

The real beauty of this CJ.............. This stand alone can be had for cheap. The megasquirt could be the best upgrade for any NA. It would allow for many future modifications................

The dilemna with any NA conversion, modification was the ability to control timing, fuel etc....

You can slap superchargers and whatever into an NA engine (although there are much better things you can do if you start with a turbo block).......... in the end you need the ability to fine tune the setup.

AFPR, massaging the stock motronic, extra injectors and band aiding it all will only lead to one thing.

BOOOOOM.

The 83' will have some other issues (fabricate a number of things) but you can't go wrong with a turbo block. Many fuel/timing maps out there to get you started..........after that is a lot of tuning. But thats half the fun.

On the 86 everything bolts on.....just a hand full of differences.

If I had an 83 I would look at putting the turbo on the passenger side. YOu would need a number of modifications but worth the hassle.

I mapped out the complete wiring for this setup ......it basicly plugs right into the stock engine bay plug. Quite happy about that accomplishment.

It's getting soooooo close now. There are just a few things to tighten down, and then sort out the tach signal and in theory it should just start up. After that, I foresee a bunch of time sitting shotgun with a laptop.

It's so nice working on the car that you don't have to worry about wires and vacuum hoses breaking if your language is too harsh.

Alex, was this the 944 I saw in front of Eurasia last week smelling of fresh paint?
