headlights

someone is trying to talk me into installing projector headlights into the stock glass headlights in the 944... he said taking the lens out, retroing the projectors inside and putting them back together wouldn't be hard..

anyway, i have no idea how it would look.. anyone tried this? or have any pictures showing what it'd look like? i dont think they'd match the 944 at all, but who knows...

If you want to upgrade the lights or change the styling, look at a fixed headlight conversion. I bought the GT Racing ones recently for my daily driver project (which I'm almost done with). Pretty nice. Gets rid of all the moving parts and crap associated with the pop-up lights (which is a huge pain to deal with) and saves some weight. Also simplifies the engine bay and cleans up a lot of things - makes it more accessible. I'll post some pics if you want.

Warning though - the "kit" they sell is far from a "bolt-on" installation - I did have to customize it a little, but if you're reasonably competent around the garage/shop, you shouldn't have any problem.

i dont really like the look of the fixed headlight conversion... nothing against 'em... just a 'to each their own' kinda thing...

There are many options available for changing the headlamps (just the light, not the whole assembly). Is your friend suggesting you cut a hole in the back of your sealed beams in order to change the bulb? I wouldn't do that. There are a few 'bolt-on' alternatives to the stupid 7" sylvania sealed beam. On ebay you can find 2 or 3 different kinds of drop-in 7" light fixtures which are designed to have removable bulbs, and I think they come with xenon bulbs. There are the e-codes, cibies, and a friend of mine has these cool looking hella fixtures that have flat glass - they look nice when off... I don't know about their light output. I don't know about any of these bulbs' light output, so either take a shot in the dark or ask people that have them. But there are options beyond cutting glass.

your best bet is to go here: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html

get a pair of Cibie 7" e-code lights that accept H4 bulbs. Get a relay kit either from him or www.rallylights.com, and get a pair of 90-100 NARVA H4 bulbs.

Don't run more than 55W bulbs on your stock wiring. Also, clean your grounds.

That should be enough to blind any deer in the road.

he's suggesting cutting the *back* off of the headlight, mounting the projector inside the headlight unit itself... that's just stupid...

i'll go ecode eventually... just never considered the projector idea before... he said he saw a 944 with one driving around brampton area and thought it looked pretty badass...

anyway, I know of dan's website... i'll check out rallylights.com... steve on the board here has a pretty decent writeup on how to make your own relay system for a very inexpensive price... so i may go that route rather than buying someone else's prepackaged materials at the cost of an arm and/or leg.

Hey Eldo...what are you calling projector lights? Are those the ones like on the Audis and Vipers?

I tried to get my daughter to let me put those on her car...no go. If the mounting was done correctly, I think they would look great. I wanted to make something chrome that sort of swept/rounded back, but she didn't want to do that. I think I would want two on each side.

how could you fit 2 in each headlight?

i just dont think they're worth the money.. 500+ bucks for the lamps and ballasts... i can think of many other things i could buy for 500 bucks for this car...
