Sway bar is actually missing...

My sway bar is actually missing as shown in the post :

Now.. a few q's...

I have read that the 87s(16v) cars come with factory sway bars , mine was supposed to be the Sp version... 23mm sway in the front... rear shocks replaced at some point with cheap ones.. and the rear sway bar has in fact gone missing...

Can you check the post and let me know if you see in one of my pictures.. where i would be mounting the SIDES of the sway bar.. or ENDS whatever you want to call it.. because i can see where the 2 mounting brackets would go in the middle of the bar..

The end links mount to the backside of the camber eccentric bolt; on cars with a rear bar a normal eccentric bolt is replaced by a double-ended eccentric bolt (which the endlink attaches to).

Honestly, I think sway bars are the last thing you should upgrade when doing a suspension. It never ceases to amuse me how many people brag about getting M030 sways or 968 sways or bigger sways or whatever, while they're still riding around on tired, worn-out old PRIMARY suspension components with 100,000+ miles on them. Sways are nice and they do help, but I'd upgrade the springs and shocks on all four corners first, change all my bushings, and then worry about sway sizes.

You should be able to pick up a stock sway bar for virtually nothing.

It seems like our cars have A LOT of body roll. I have the Koni adjustables (those are the good ones, RIGHT?) and I always wish that my car didn't lean so much.

Shocks don't stop body roll, they can slow the roll rate, but they won't reduce the roll amount in steady-state cornering. Shocks only dampen oscillations. If you want to reduce roll in steady-state cornering, you need to change the springs.

Historically Porsche has used softer springs with stiffer dampers (shocks). More roll, but excellent control.

Or swaybars. Swaybars will also reduce roll, at a lesser impact on ride quality (vs. comparable spring stiffness). Otherwise, you are correct.

That's why the Weltmeister swaybars are so popular for our cars; easy to bolt on, and a definite noticeable difference. Too bad they're overpriced (IMO).

I agree that replacing old worn out shocks & rubber is important and I think Marcone is going down that route. Upgrading to huge sway bars and ignoring everything else may be a mistake but I think in this case the 944S came with a rear sway bar so I would think it would be best to put one on. 18MM sway bars pop up on the for sale section for $50, that just a little more than an oil change.

Wicked.. ill be buying one along with the rest of the suspension.... RIGHT AFTER I GET A CAM CHAIN TENSIONNER... just got scared today... the car died and then wouldnt start... but puffed once or twice here an there...

ended up being electrical because of the down pour of rain..but still a little scary... 192kilometres so its due...

Car started fine after a few min of dry time...

Sway bars are AWSOME!!!! It is important to first replace stock struts an shocks first with AT LEAST boge turbos, and to make sure your control arm bushings are in excellent condition, but big used sway bars are the best suspension upgrade for the money IMO. Almost no change to ride harshness and I'd say a 20-40% reduction in body roll depending on what you bars you have and what you upgrade to.

I took my front swaybar off once. The body roll scared me! It made a HUGE difference without it. I took it off to rule out an issue in the front end.

Anyone that tells you a swaybar doesn't matter should gladly take thier's off and give them to you! Mine mattered a lot. I could not believe the difference. Not real sure if how much the different sizes matter. But none is BAD. I know for a fact!

yes - setup happens in the order of first establishing good bushings and mounts - then springs and dampers, the latter being chosen to match the springs chosen, then tune with swaybars - finally set the car up based on how you drive by setting appropriate geometry

after you have done the rest of the suspension work, if you are looking to reduce body roll, i have a set of 968 swaybars (26.8mm front and 16mm rear) i want to get out of my way and will let go for cheap

Flash is right on!! Got to set some priorities; bushings mounts, etc, etc. Hate to give advise but......... set up a budget too. Identify the part(s) and where you are going to get them from. There are some provious posts on suspensions that included links to do some research.

The problem I had is cars can become a money pit; new suspension parts, brakes, wheels, tires on and on. Build yourself a budget - you can then see what you are in for.

After all of your suspension work, you will need to align this thing.

thanks... I already posted that i was upgrading the suspension at the moment.. one of my previous posts.

which is how i found out that i was missing the rear sway bar....

So my first priority is replacing the bushings for all the junk down there... already ordered most of them....

then i have to have the sway bar to put on while i replace the rear shocks.

fronts will be changed soon along with the shock mounts.

if i can find it all at a decent price...

Springs.. dunno if i need them at the moment..but while im in there.. why not... im mostly concerned about the rear..as the shocks i think are poop... and the sway bar is missing...

lol - so true - one of my best friends - he's pretty flexible and he's moving right now, so i know he's motivated to not have them come back to his house

frankly i didn' really check them out - he just tossed them in my trunk and said to sell them - i then stuck them in the cabinet with all of my springs and such (way too many eibach boxes in there)

i'll take a closer look at them and then call him on price, but i'm sure he won't want more than 100 bucks for them

lol - now that i am thinking about it, i think i need to gather together all of this stuff and get to a swap meet or something - such a hassle though
