swaybar compatibility questionm
I have the 84 NA with steel control arms. I'm looking at front and rear swaybars off of a '88 944 Turbo, front is 27mm and rear is a 19mm and includes drop links.
Anyone know if they'll work or what issues there might be?

Everything is basically direct fit with a few modifications and / or parts. The rear sway bar will fit without problem as long as you have all of the parts. That includes droplinks, eccentric bolt and the bushing straps for the torsion bar carrier. This is assuming your car does not have a rear swaybar right now.
You may need to bore out the endlink bushings for the front sway bar a bit and i think you will need the larger center bushing clamps.

The front sway bars are interchangeable. However, the bushings are sold based on the size of the swaybar. As you move to a larger bar, the inner diameter of the bushings is increased but the brackets that hold all of the different swaybars are the same.
You will need to know the size of the swaybar before you order bushings. Pelican sells them in the different sizes and there about $18 I'm not sure why but the turbo bushings are $ and all the rest are about $6. Also, when you order the bushings, you won't find this size listed for your '84 because they did not make a turbo in '84 - but the swaybars will fit any 944. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/944M/POR_944M_SUSshk_pg6.htm#item25 I replaced my bushings from www.944online.com and they were $12.95 ea and OEM. |

thanks guys. saved me a bunch of searching.
I don't know how competitive this setup will be in Spec class, but it's about all I can afford now so it's better than stock setup. I also have a line on some Koni front strut inserts, still in box, $160/set. seems too good to pass up if I can get time to go pick them up. Then I'll just need the rear Koni's and be good to go for a while.

I have a '84 as well and put on the Turbo sway bars. I also have Koni shocks and some good tires. This package has given me a very nice ride so far. The sway bars do create a big improvement I found. I have done some auto crosses with this set up and can not complain for only spending a few hundred to get them.

Follow my link below to see how I dealt with the sway bar issues. Don't hesitate to PM me with any questions. I researched the heck out of this before I did it.
