I was letting the clutch out gently and was just getting on the gas (~5mph) when I shuttered and blew white smoke and then died. My wife was in the car with me and can attest. I guess I was driving it too easy

Speedy,
I think your car had supernatural powers and thought since you werent driving her hard, she thought she was stolen and driven by another and self-distructed...but seriously. My condolences on your engine. I'm glad my engine donor will go into your NA and breathe new life again.

What on earth is that (all the metal chunks)? Did a ring break and do the damage? Or is it just a chunk of the top of the piston? It's kinda tough to tell looking at the pix. It's not the valves.
And that's a helluva crack in the cylinder wall. Jeeze....

wow............................................... ...
I would expect to see pictures like that to follow; "...after doing doughnuts for 20 minutes I dragged a blown civic then I noticed my water temp was off the gauge after 3 7500rpm shifts, on a side note my warning light doesn't work....." That sucks, have never seen a liner explode like that. Put a new motor in it, don't part it. Remember: Don't crush it, restore it! ;-)

A little JB Weld in there, you should be good to go

Is that picture showing a dropped valve seat? OMG... that is serious destruction. Can you post a few close ups of the head? BTW, if #2 had the messed up spark plug, is there any explanation in there?
One time, about 15 years ago, one of my spark plugs lost the electrode. I pulled the plug out and the electrode was missing. I had a friend haul me to autozone, bought a new plug and popped it in the car and finished my next run. Oh yeah, I was at an autocross at the time about 100 miles from home. And I was 16, and it was my dad's car at the time... needless to say, I was worried that I would not be able to get the stains out of my shorts. Now "Speedy" (I named it that when I was 11 so leave me alone) is all mine so I get to deal with all the problems ![]()

Wow, Now im afraid to take my old engine apart to see destruction like that. I know I spun a bearing before, so mine had a reason to go, but yours just going( and in the same way too) is kinda odd. Shaking, a noise, and the whole car shuts off.
Worst feeling in the world.

Speedy,
Pictures and posts are great. Looking closely at the head picture(s), there was serious head gasket deterioration going on. ![]() Thanks for the updates and pictures. John_AZ |

High Compression=too much of a good thing?
Not trying to be a party pooper, but seeing as how you'd mentioned that your compression readings were all so high and consistent... highest dyno test, etc. - I'm wondering if this was too much of a good thing? That perhaps an engine this old is simply not capable of holding such compression/hp without a greater risk of catastrophic failure? Anybody out there want to comment on this?

OMFG!!
I haven't seen any motor blow like that in a long time! I guess you can be happy that it happened close to home, and not oh, say, 3/4 of the way to Indiana for the gathering! Honestly though, I have never seen a 944 engine die that particular death! "You have the technology, you can rebuild it, make it better, make it stronger" ![]() -Nick

I am already doing one LT1 project. I don't need 2 right now. Plus I have a spare 944 8V motor to go in.
My original idea was to ITB the 944S 16 valve with MegaSquirtII and dump it into the '83 But I have too many projects going on right now plus full time engineering school plus work plus 2 hours worth of commuting plus family plus old farm. It has just been a crappy week. My wife got a lay-off letter. The porsche died. My wife's pregnant goat just died and the washing machine just exploded and put a hole in the brand new wall I just repaired. Life is sucking pretty bad right now. ![]()
