th scratches are fine Speedy, mine has them too and ran good compression and didn't have any blowby from the rings....compression is a different story after I "modded" my valves. And as stated before, any time you get a gasket set it's upgraded to the turbo head gasket. I just pissed off that I put a widefire on mine and now I have to put the regular turbo gasket on when i get my head back together! Let me know what you think about those valves, I should only need two, but by the time I you get a machine shop to pull them and then pay shipping and what ever you want for them, i may just be as well to get two new ones from pelican, they are like 18.50. let me know what you think.

From the pictures, the scratches do not mean a thing. To begin to worry, you have to "catch" your fingernail on the scratch. Looks good.

I know about the mosquitoes in WI. Previous Eagle River and West Bend.

Again, I want some of the vitamins you're using.

Are you seriously from West Bend? What years did you live there? I grew up there from 1987 to 1995.

Yup, UWWC 2 years, moved to AZ. Had a really small cabin near Eagle River and still own 2 acres on K in Conover. Not in '87 to 95. Mosquitoes and deer ticks.

Take time to enjoy the 4th.

Good news. I pulled the bad engine out of my '83 944. I pulled the engine through the top this time and can say it is a big PITA compared to dropping it out the bottom. I broke somethings pulling it out through the top because it was such a tight fit. The new motor will be going in through the bottom.

I will post pics once I get them downloaded off my camera.

I am impressed.
That block can be re-sleeved. I saw the process from a link on the 951 site. They machine down the existing sleeves, flycut and install steel sleeves with some reinforcement. Those kooky 951 guys!
If you have extra cash laying around you can always do this and bump up the displacement to 3.0 L or so and toss in a stroker crank and... and...
That would also be impressive.

Horicon, WOW. I always travel through there on my way to West Bend. I would of never known there was a Porsche shop there since I have never even seen a Porsche near that town of 4000 people.

The only option for that engine is a resleave since the cylinder wall has a 3" X 3" chunk missing out of it. I thought about a resleave but that would only be economical for a big HP turbo buildup. I have no interest in doing that when I have a 'S' engine, regular 8 valve engine, and a 5.7L LT1 V8 sitting in my garage looking for homes in my engine bays.

If somebody want the bare block for a sleave job they can have it.

Speedracing944-

That photo is totally staged... you're from Wisconsin and there is only ONE beer bottle in the photo... Come on who are you trying to fool? One case maybe but only one bottle? Was the photo taken the afternoon of recycling day?

Just kidding. Great photos. Thanks for posting.

I'm in roughly the same boat but I'm going to leave it to the "pros" to install my new engine.

wow! I totally missed this one! Strange how it blew up taking it so easy. Same way my transmission blew...just a rare moment of driving easy, and CLUNK!! Why these failiures don't blow up revving feverishly to 6500 rpms in a spectacular kablooie doesn't make much sense.

So how's the engine swap comming?

The M44 engines are organized like this:

fan -> 4 3 2 1 -> windshield, Cylinder 1 is the one you're calling 4 :-)

Good luck with your repair.

That's incorrect Jake. Straight from the factory service manual, the order is as follows:

Fahrtrichtung is the direction of travel, ie, forwards. therefor Cyl #1 is the one closest to the bumper.

SpeedRacing944-
It seems I am just down the road from you - 14/County H. I just picked up an 87 924S - it's rough and requires tinkering every night, but it is a blast. If you you ever need a hand just call me up - phone is listed. Good luck!

Hey sorry to hear about your engine dude my luck has been the same.

Out of the blue I heard the same sound your engine was making on YouTube, first thought was the lifters too.

It seems the #2 rod bearing is becoming a problem with these engines as they age. Mine will be the 4th engine with the same problem this year just at my engine shop...so careful with a replacement engine if the Km (oops Miles) are high never know what's in there...and that's alot of work your doing.

A couple of my friends have been building these engines for racing since the 944 hit the market. If you are looking for any advice I am sure I could get one of them into some long winded explanation for you...they're good at that!

Good Luck

County H is one of my favorite runs in the area. Go North on H from hwy 14 till you hit Fulton. It's a darn shame they straightened out the road. We have to meet up some time.

Good to see ya here!

I am going to do further work on the motor and car after my last final exam on Friday. I sold some stuff from out of my shed so I can move the motorcycle out of the garage and bring the '83 in from the snowy outside. I will have to remount the cross member and the steering rack first. I should have done this before the 12 inches of snow and chilly temps.

Wow Small world I was born and raised in West Bend as well, quite a bit before you though. I left in 1976, drive through there now and then to visit family though.

Hey speedracing944- Bad news my 87 924s just decided to stop running. I was on my way to work this week, pulling into the parking lot, it just stopped, no noises, nothing. I'm able to turn it over and all sounds well. Flat bedded back from Ft Atkinson, I'll be tinkering the next couple of weeks to try and find the problem. ps. Ain't WI weather grand!
