Upon further inspection is appears as if the valve seat dropped out and fell into the combustion chamber.

So sorry for your loss, dude. I know how it feels to have this happen - my old Bronco dropped a valve and the damage was pretty much identical to what you're seeing. All the coolant got mixed in with the oil. It was the most disgusting fluid I've ever seen.

Wow.

I'm very sorry to hear this. I always thought of your 944 as particularly strong-running.

Has anyone ever seen a functional temp or low fuel warning light in a 944? Mine don't even bulb check. 2 different clusters, same result.

oh, and Speedy, that sucks. At least you have an "interesting" failure to brag about. Most impressive.

I rely on my low fuel idiot light to tell me when to fill up, the gas gauge sinks to empty on anything less than 1/4 tank.

I am always sorry to see engine destruction like this and hope you fix it instead of bailing out. I would like to offer the following alternative theory:

#2 rod bearing spun causing the rod/piston length to increase, which caused the piston to strike the head breaking the piston above the top ring land and cracking the cylinder wall. The piston fragments are what bent the valve and caused the other damage.

When you get it apart, let us know what you find.

HOLY GOD.

How did I miss this thread?

Even more importantly, HOW DID YOU DO THAT TO YOUR CAR? I have been on Pelican for many years, and I have NEVER seen that kind of destruction to a 944 engine. To quote Ron Burgundy, "I'm not even mad. I'm impressed."

Block is pretty much toast. Pistons are toast. HEAD is toast. Any idea what failed to cause such a meltdown?!?

BTW, your engine bay is remarkably clean!

Pulling the motor from the donor car.

Motor pulled from donor car

The donor motor in the garage.

Today was engine pulling time on the donor car. I started at 11:00am and finished at 3:00pm. So it only took 4 hours to do. I did it outside with mosquitoes attacking me.

Action plan...
clean engine
pull head and inspect cylinder walls and head
renew head gasket, roller seals and such
replace clutch
pull my engine out of my '83
install new donor motor
pray and turn the key

Speedy

I think I will be alright unless if when I pull the head on the donor motor it's all chewed up. If so then we will talk

What do you guys think about the couple of scratches on the cylinder walls?

The head gasket said "turbo" on it. Should I replace the head gasket with a "turbo" gasket?

Rich you are a madman. Here I'm thinking you'd need help taking the engine out and you've already taken 2 engines out. Your doing just fine without me and Joe getting in your way...good luck with your engine transplant.

Speedy,
You are good. Donor engine out-head off.
The gasket says turbo because it has been changed once before from the original OEM.
The new gaskets sets all use the "updated turbo gasket"

From the pictures, the scratches do not mean a thing. To begin to worry, you have to "catch" your fingernail on the scratch. Looks good.

I know about the mosquitoes in WI. Previous Eagle River and West Bend.

Again, I want some of the vitamins you're using.
