83 shifter problem

I am trying to put back together a 83 manuel trans shift lever.

(it was apart when I got it)

and I have no idea what should hold the shift handle in?

The ball portion on the bottom of the handle goes in the hole but what keeps the ball and handle down so it does not come out? It appears that it was just being held in with the boot. There has to be something else. I could not find any help of the parts diagram

Thanks

This is how the late car shifters go together, yours is probably pretty close.

Good luck,

Keith

I got a whole new shifter (for my late 944) from 944online.com . Not too expensive, and arrived quickly.

Just a small reminder... Please check Pelicans prices and availability. We need to support this website. Their pricing is very competitive.

Yup! Pelican is always my first choice. However, 944online offered the kit complete, including the washer. Competition is good for business. Pelican has never let me down.

If you have a shifter knob that is attached to the boot itself and the picture above looks like your shifter you need a metal clip that goes over that rubber piece and holds the shifter in place.
