Picked up my dyno engine, looking for bits to start using it.

Well, I picked up the 44 engine yesterday that I will be using to dyno test the port matched cylinder heads I've been rebuilding. Down the line, I plan on lightly machining intake manifolds and throttle bodies as well to offer "matched sets". It looks like I may have another line on a partial engine to pick up in a couple of weeks, but am looking for some pieces-parts to fully assemble this dyno engine to start getting some numbers.

If anyone has a bellhousing or early wiring harness lying around, please fire me a PM with details on location and how much you would like for them. I don't need the sensor bracket or sensors, I already have a good pair. I have the DME all ready to go, and will be welding the test cradle up this afternoon.

I may have a spare bellhousing. I might use the one from my '83 to put onto the 85.5 engine as the sensor area looks a little different and I will be running my '83 sensors and computer. I may also use my '83 flywheel on the 85.5 engine.

The bellhousing would be from the 85.5 engine.

That should work. Tomorrow I will be cutting splines on a test shaft to go from the pressure plate to the dyno sensor. Not a whole lot of fun, but a nessesity with this style bell housing

I picked up the engine from a guy that said he thought the t-belt had broken because the engine wouln't turn over, even by hand... When I opened it up, the head gasket was toast, but the break was from the oil passage! Cyl 1 had about 1/2 quart of oil in it, so the engine was hydro-locked. I still need to tear it the rest of the way down to blueprint everything, as I want to make sure I know every detail of this engine before I start putting it to the test! If everything goes well, I should have it re-built by the middle of next week. If I can track down a harness, I might start getting dyno info by the end of next week.

I am currently checking to see if there is any difference between an early vs. late bellhousing. Is yours an early? I appreciate the offer for the TB with TPS, but already have several ready for testing. I will definitely keep that in mind though in the upcoming months as I start polishing TBs for different dyno runs.

I have both an early and a late bellhousing. IIRC the later bellhousing has an extra hole in the top for some other sort of sensor. I will check tonight to verify.

Nick,

Sounds like you have your own engine dyno? Do you have any interest in testing an engine management system?

I developed a fuel and ignition system. It is speed density, no air meter is required. I would expect some improvement in performance without the air meter restriction. It will need a Mopar 2.2 turbo hall effect distributor fitted to the cam end. The rest of the connections are plug-n-play. The other advantages are sequential injection, direct fire ignition, and real-time user adjustable parameters.

If the unit demonstrates significant performance increases perhaps the project will be more than a hobby. Please note I am not selling units at this time.

I have played with the system on air cooled VWs, Porsche 914's NA - Turbo, and a 2.2 Mopar Turbo with good results. My 944 is an auto, so testing with it and a wheel dyno might be fruitless.

Originally I was planning on using the engine dyno at the local Kmotion Racing shop as they owe me a few favors However, now it looks like I have a line on a used DYNOmite setup! It comes with the hydro unit, all the sensors, the "magic black box" and software, I just have to supply the computer. Give me a month or so to get everything up and running. After that, I'm sure I could try your mods.

I am hoping to get some stock baseline numbers by the end of this month. After that, I will be swapping the head to one that I have port matched and comparing the data. At that point, I would like to keep that head in place and start getting numbers from machined and polished intake manifolds, and eventually modified throttle bodies. I might get around to running a comparison between the stock air-box and the cone filter conversion, but at this point, it's low on the list

I have a couple of older PC's that run XP. I can donate to the cause. They are about 8 years old. What specs do you need? Do you need an ISA or PCI slot for the interface?

A month sounds good. Perhaps I can fabricate the distributor sensor mount and get things to run on my 944.
