Where are those timing marks?
The one on the cam is easy, and it only makes one rotation per cycle, so it's either on or not. I am having more trouble locating the one on the crank. I think I have it, being wrong is too horrific to contemplate. Piston #1 is at top, checked through the spark plug hole, At the back of the engine, from the top looking down through the hole in the bell housing, I see 2 parallel lines.
Is this in the right position?

There also is a mark on the flywheel that appears in the small TDC opening at the very bottom of the bellhousing that is easier to align than the one in the TDC window up top. Obviously that only helps if the car is jacked up high enough to see it. Sounds like your other marks are OK as long as you are looking at them square on and not from an angle.

The flywheel will read "OT" and have a line beside it. As above, check for the groove on the bottom first. You can see significantly more of the flywheel from down here and can align it better. Once you have that groove lined up you will be able to see OT in the top window. Fine-tune it to match up with the protruding tab on the bellhousing and you are in business.

Most likely the flywheel will be rusty and the OT mark completely indistinguishable in the little window in the bellhousing on the top. When you know you are close, spray some brake clean or spray lubricant (anything wet really) on the flywheel and the marks will magically appear, then disappear when the liquid evaporates....
just ones of those tricks
