pulling the engine
Hi all, I'd like to try to pull the engine on an 86 turbo (big hole in crankcase) I dropped an 85.5 na before and think it might be easier out the top. Does the turbo and crossover have to come out? I'm thinking unbolt the xmember and anything attached to it, the tt, I was gonna leave the front dress on. Can anyone advise before I get it 3 feet in the air and stuck? Thanks in advance.

The engine is removed via the bottom of the car. Believe me, it is much easier doing it that way than from the top. Seems like a lot of steps but not really, because all that stuff has to be removed prior anyway.
Good luck and welcome to the Pelican boards and Porsche 944 ownership.

Besides maybe all the extra disassembly applicable to turbos that I don't know, it's really not as bad to drop it out the bottom as it sounds, especially if you have a proper engine lift. Just disconnect everything (wiring, cooling hoses, oil lines, exhaust) whichever way you prefer, pop the steering ball joints off the steering knuckles, disconnect power steering lines, undo the steering u-joint from the rack (mark its orientation first, and the retaining/clamp bolt has to come completely out), dismount the steering rack and pump, remove the front swaybar, drop the exhaust, support the engine, unbolt the torque tube from the bell housing, rotate it, and pull it back like how you would do it for a clutch job (requires dropping the tranny). Rather than separating the ball joints on the suspension arms like the manual says, I was able to just remove the main through bolt on the crossmember that the suspension arms pivot on, and the rear rubber bushing had enough give to allow me to pull the arms away enough to allow the crossmember to come clear. Then it's just the engine mount bolts (pick your poison...either the single bolt that holds th mount to the crossmember, or the two on the top of the mounts that attach them to the engine members, they're probably all stuck), and the 4 big crossmember bolts. Then just lower the engine onto something that will let you slide it out from under the car.
Clarks garage should detail the operation pretty nicely. A day and a can of PB'laster is usually what's needed.

Yes it will come out the top, I did it on a 83 na. The reason i went out the top was i did not have anything that would get the car high enough for the engine to slide below the front bumper. Only thing is rad has to come out, but its best anyway to prevent damage. Note also the axle still has to be dropped a little, because motor has to move forward then up, and it hits the cross bar.

Thanks everyone for the help, hey tnporsche when you say axle do you mean the crossmember, cause I'll take that out. I took one out the wheelwell before and it was just a pita, I have an engine to put in there after I pull it from the 85.5, so Its really a big time saver, in theory! I'll try to snap some pix If I remember and it goes well, thanks again all

I tried to take a motor out the top before, ended up giving up and going out the bottom.
Unbolted everything, used engine hoist to lower the engine onto a rug on on the floor. Undid hoist from engine, connected it to front tow hook. Lifted car with engine hoist high enough to slide engine on the carpet out the bottom. Pretty simple.
