Question What to do with 2 lb of cat guts?

So I got a second Y-pipe to make into a test pipe by welding a glasspack resonator, but decided to just knock out the cat core and use it as it is and just save up for a burch header or something later. The 944MAX chip from LR that I have is tuned to run without a cat, so that's why I'm doing this. Mine was running pretty rich with the cat in place and I found it it should either run -3% fuel on the FQS, or normal without a cat (+ a couple hp). I'm surprised just how much stuff was inside the OEM cat. There was like 3 or 4 layers of ~1.5 in thick ceramic grid. It is mostly pretty clean. There was a little bit of melting that happened, but most of it was intact.
I know this stuff is worth some money. What kind of place actually buys this stuff. If anyone here can recycle it, they are more than welcome to make a fair offer.

I hope you wore a respirator and gloves when doing that. Else you'll need to sell that to pay for future cancer treatment.

Those ceramic bits inside contain traces of platinum and palladium. Recycle centers give anywheres between $25 and $75 for one, depending on the market. My old cat from my track car garnered $35 last year.

Yes, why do you think there have been a rash of incidents where punks will literally sawz-all people's cats off their cars while they're parked?

Same reason they steal copper wiring from abandoned houses. It fetches top $$$ at scrap yards right now.

We should all wear a respirator when we do a clutch job and get a face full of the fiber heat shield backing by the bell housing.

COUGH COUGH!!

Uhmmm... Guys: Places don't really take that unless it is still in the housing, NOT punched out gathered in a bag.

Oh, in further news, my local police force caught the guy who was stealing cats from cars parked at the local mall. He used a skateboard to get under them quick and a battery sawzall to chop em off.

Yea we did kinda forge to mention that- they want the whole cat, they won't just take bits of it.

On side note, I have the feeling that that car will sound hellishly raspy with a gutted cat. Its a big resonance chamber that probably won't make the pretty sounds yo want it to. Replacing it with a straight through fiberglass resonator (cherry bomb) will deaden the high end ricer sound but keep the nice loud low end.

Well, I'll have to see how it sounds. It does have a small built in resonator after the cat chamber. I decided to just do it cheap for now, but no reason it can't come off later to have a full glasspack installed.

It's worth the experience making your own glasspack with it maybe. given the nice cylindrical shape of the cat, go buy some fiberglass matting (boat manufactures have tons of scrap of this stuff) and find some steel perforated sheet. Roll up the fiberglass on the inside of the cat, and then roll the steel mesh into a tube and put it in the center. we've made a few race mufflers this way and they can be surprisingly good sounding for literally zero cost.

Oh, come on now. They should give you MORE money for it if it is already removed! Removing it is hard work. How do I know? I have a coffee can full of the stuff, myself. I don't think I would take less than 100 for it.

The cat has to be in one piece for them to buy it. This is due to health hazards involved. The dealer then sells to a recycle operation that has the proper equipment to handle the cat interior. Your Government At Work.

Cheers,
Larry

Well, since I have already dealt with the health hazards, in addition to the hassle, and it is now safely sealed inside of a coffee can, logic dictates that it should be MORE valuable. It is just an issue of skipping over the middle man (them, or dealer, or whoever), and selling directly to the folks who cook the stuff down with concentrated sufuric, nitric,, and hydrochloric acids to extract the highly valuable metals such as platinum and palladium. And since our cars use a 3-way catalyst, there would also be some rhodium. I don't want to just throw the stuff away, knowing it contains valuable exotic metals, but I don't have the ambition to get into that sort of chemical processing, especially for just 1 cat. OK, I'll take 50, and not a cent less!

What are you saying is carcinogenic, the metals (platinum, palladium, rhodium) that the ceramic substrate is plated with, or the ceramic itself? I was unaware that any of those were carcinogenic. But I do know that the metals involved are heavy, so maybe the issue is "heavy metal" poisoning? I'm sure I sucked in some of the dust, but it's way too late to worry about that now, as it's "water over the damn", long ago.

As soon as I get the exact weight of what I have, I plan on contacting SYC.com to find out what they will give me.

Cat recyclers separate the inside stuff from the metal. They break them open and separate the powder which has the most value. The cat housings can either be stainless or steel and those metals are separated too.

Anytime you are working with dust generated from a process you should either have an exhaust system attached to the device (grinding wheel, saw), work in a well ventilated area or wear a respirator. Dust is not good for your lungs. Maybe not so bad for a one time use; but I certainly would wear protective clothing, gloves and a mask this was my regular job.

Make some calls to find out who will take the dust. It might cost you more to ship the stuff than it is worth. Metal can be sold anywhere.
