Running hot
My 86 944 was running good and then tonight as I was driving I had the red exclamation on the cluster come on, I replaced the water pump about 2 months ago and replaced the thermostat but not sure where the temp sensor is located to see if it is bad. I may have to replace the hose coming from the waterpump outlet to the lower radiator port.
Why would it run hotter than normal since coolant is getting through? |

Honestly, this could be a lot of things. Frankly, you might have a coolant leak and just ran dry.
Another thing is proper fan operation. The fans don't even run at all when the temperature is below 92C (just under the 2nd white mark on the late cluster). At 102C the main fan should go into high-speed mode. The second mark in the gauge is 100C so just after it the fans should be high-speed. I know on my '86 the fans don't really when the car is moving over 30MPH. Only sitting at a lot of stop and go traffic does it get high enough to trigger the fans at all.

Do the fans go on at the right time? Does the thermostat open? What temp thermostat are you using? Which thermal switch do you have? Depending on the switch you have, the fans start earlier or later. For example, thermal fan switch (Behr) 823.959.481 E turns the fans on at 65 degrees C whereas the switch ScoobySteve is talking about, 823.959.481 F turns on the fans at 92 degrees C. If you replaced the parts without knowing what values they were, you may have inadvertently switched the operating profile of your cooling system.

Yessir wild man, I am. I have the listing for the full production of thermal fan switches from Behr, most of which I have in stock.
823.959.481 E is 65/60, 823.959.481 is 75/70, 823.959.481 D is 82/77 and 823.959.481 F is 92/87 degree C. Now the thermostats are another story. Up til last fall I was using a 71 degree C thermostat and the 65 degree thermal fan switch but I believe the car was not actually hitting proper operating temp (too low). I am swapping to the 75/70 thermal fan switch and the 82 degree thermostat for spring.

Your fans have a over ride, in the form of the A/C switch. When you feel you need more cooling in the radiator, turn on your A/C switch, whether your A/C is working or not. The over heating could be due to an air bubble in the cooling system. You can bleed the system by running the engine up to temp and unscrew the bolt on top of the inlet pipe next to the intake manifold. Close it when a solid stream of hot water comes out.
I beleive that the temp sensor is the one on the lower right rear of the radiator, looking from in front of the car. |
