I need to know
My son wants a 928, i found a nice one, but does not run. Are they similar to work on to the 944? Like timing belt, cams, trans axle, all that stuff. Is there a cam tensioner?

Some similarities and some differences. The question is why does it not run? If pre '84 and not euro and timing belt broke, then a new belt is in order. If after '84 and belt lost then serious damage is very possible. As with 944's electrical gremlins love to live in them. As for cam tensioner 32 valve cars ('85 and newer) have cam tensioners. Without recent history all routine maintainence should be done before driving. I believe renlist has a PPI somewhere that will give you a good resource for things to look for and ask about. Hope this helps some, Don.

It's a 84, I haven't looked at it yet. So if its a pre 84 the valves wont hit the pistons when the belt broke? Its a auto, which is good to start with. Are they also an trans axle? I think I can talk the person down on the price.

along with a host of 944's (7)and other cars i have totaling up to at this time 17 . one of my favorite cars is my 928GTS . as for the there are 3x as many problems with a 928 ? in a word NO . i have more problems with my 944s than any of the 928s i have ever had . the drive line lay out is the same with the 928 models as the 944 . i would not get an other early 928 or one with an auto trans . an auto tran is a good trans but for ME its like beer with no alcohol or coffee with out caffeine . i just can't see a sports coupe with out a standered shift . like the 944 the 928s are very cheap priced cars for what you get . the cost to repair is not thow ! you can find a 928 thats running for such good prices i would stay away from any 944 or 928 that does not run .

Unfortunately the vast majority of 928's came with automatic transmissions, as the car was designed to be the "businessman's hotrod". The only way I would accept the ownership of one, is if it had a manual transmission. BTW, the manuals have double clutches. In my opinion, the body style of the 928 is the best of any production car ever produced.
