What did you get done in 2010?

Let's see here, what did you do to your p-car in 2010?

I bought 2 porsches in the last 4 months

Did 1 944 clutch

Pulled the intake twice.

And took a lot of it apart several times.

Bought my 951S...that's the biggest news! Am purchasing parts when they pop up to bring the car to 100%.

Neglected my 944S's timing belt until it sheared teeth--head rebuild, all new hoses, seals, belts, tune up parts and more since then. Put snow tires on it and I'm using it for my winter daily.

931--fixed the grounds to the motor, fixed a coolant leak, gave the keys to mom for her summer car.

mom's 911SC--ignored it...it needs help and I need to clear time and space to pull the motor/transmission

Superbird #1--sent to a body shop where it's getting fixed as I find money

Superbird #2--finished an interior restoration, drove the car to Canada for a Mopar show, enjoyed the car as a summer cruiser.

'69 Daytona NASCAR lookalike--Completed 5.7 liter HEMI swap to pick up power and mileage for long trips.

Oh god! Let me see if I can remember everything.

In no particular order:
Bought two sets of tires, 951 M030 sway bars, rear Bilstein shocks, bought a steering wheel for ten dollars, bought 15" Phone Dials and repainted them graphite, bought an engine to rebuild, took it apart brought the head and crankshaft to the machine shop and decided it wasn't worth the money, replaced lots of little things (door mirror, fog light etc.) stripped a lug nut and had to drill the stud out (boy was that fun ) bought a cobra sport seat from a fellow pelican/CVR PCA member, fixed my sloppy shifter, got my injectors rebuilt, replaced most of the vacuum lines, rebuilt my power steering pump, took my bumper pads off to "shave" it and compress the shocks (but I got lazy and just left it without the pads) ordered several hundreds of dollars worth of parts that still haven't been used (I'll get to it eventually)

And the most significant, I decided to go to an autocross event "just to try it once or twice." I ended up joining the PCA two months later, went to all ten events (plus one nonPCA autocross) and wound up winning "Rookie of the Year." Autox kicks ass!

I can't wait to see what I do with my car in 2011. I just hope I don't go broke

Lessee. On my 951,

1)I fought with the ball joints - rebuilt them with the Rennbay kit, only to have one fail (the socket, as it turned out, was out of round), then installed newer control arms with good ball joints; installed new solid control arm bushings, then had the car aligned.

2) Installed a new sub and new speakers (a small powered, Kenwood sub and Eclipse speakers);

3) I rolled the fenders (they'd been scraping on bumps);

4) I changed the brake booster (and then afterwards, found out the problem was a blockage in the stupid vacuum line - d'oh!).

On my 83 NA:

1) Installed new engine mounts;

2) Rebuilt both front control arms (new bushings and ball joints; replaced one tie rod;

3) Installed new left rear wheel bearing;

4) Installed new rear carpet;

5) Replaced the wiper motor;

6) Replaced the distributor cap and rotor.

OK, my list would take a whole page, but here's the big ones:

- new exh mani gaskets
- refurb the cooling system: radiator, all hoses, flush, etc.
- 18mm rear sway install with prothane bushings
- rear Koni shocks
- front 25.5mm sway install with delrin inner bushings and braces
- Swepco in the tranny
- new O2 sensor
- new rear wheel bearings, plus paint rear calipers and dust shields
- clean all electrical grounds, replace all fuses

OK, not as big as I thought, but still plenty of work on the old girl!

Sold Euro 84 924.
Bought 84 944.
Did entire FOES.
R&R'ed intake and such.
Changed struts and shocks.
Rebuilt the clutch hydraulics.
Flushed and refilled entire hydraulic system.
Did complete tune-up.

That was the last 4 months. If I get my oil cooler O-rings in time I can squeak in an oil cooler reseal for the 84 too.

I can't remember everything I've done this year but I keep a log and it may be worth checking. I know this year I did a 924 clutch, a 924 dash rebuild/heater refurb and a whole schwack of other stuff, including working on our Mazda 626, my wife's Niva, my brother's Quest (timing belt, water pump, suspension and some other stuff). I got the race car 924 up and running, and Mand and Scottie finished that after I tuned it and did the suspension.

It's looking like I'm in the wrong line of work...

Hmmm...
Drove about 13K miles
Changed oil a couple times
Swapped in a Thrush 2 chamber muffler that sounds awesome
Paid a $90 ticket because my headlight switch crapped out at the worst possible time (at night in front of a cop and 5 min from home)
Built a relay harness for the headlights so the dumb switch won't melt down again
Shelved the K&N air filter because the OEM Mahle has no performance impact and filters better
Finally got to replacing the rear main seal that leaked since November last year when I finished the rebuilt motor. Motor is dry as a bone now.
New battery and alternator cables
Installed oil temp gage in center cluster
New complete clutch hydraulics
New EBC red stuff brake pads and rotors all the way around
New front wheel bearings
Another new rear rotor because a loose piece of parking brake linkage destroyed the first new one.
New parking brake shoes and cable. Finally got the thing working again...total PITA
First compression test on the rebuild and results were awesome. 13K and about 1 qt/2500 miles oil consumption
Swapped a bad lifter for a good used one
Rotated tires and found that one of the wheels is in fact bent
Finally unclogged winshield washer nozzles
Got hit on the left front by a damn toyota driving through the median for a left turn lane.
Just rebuilt both front brake calipers since the right front was sticking
Wrestling with a bunch of random dumb little problems trying to get lights and horn working for safety inspection.

Tomorrow I get to finish with the dumb problems, adjust the parking brake, and try to get the thing through inspection.
I just hope for not much in 2011 since I'm in full time school now and just don't have the time and money to deal with anything major. Both the love and the hate has gotten stronger over the last year or so. Still runs great, looks like crap even more now, a few rust spots showing up here and there...probably going to be a rat rod by the time I get out of school and have money. Still cheaper to fix than buying some beat to hell used car and have to fix everything wrong with it, and alot more fun, plus practically more than half the car has been replaced by now.

Thanks James. I can't wait for next season. Now that you and John come on a regular basis and several other 944's and 968's show up from time to time it should be a lot of fun. I've got a feeling that towards the middle of the season I'll have to start watching my back a little for you

Yeah I was thinking about that. It's something I've always wanted to do. I just have to see if my car's up to it. There's still some work I'd have to do to it before I'd trust it on a track.

2010 was a pretty good year maintenance wise

1) New clutch and p plate
2) New reference and speed sensors
3) Replaced DME and KLR (Thanks Pauerman)
4) New tires
5) lower and corner balance
6) Install 10 disk changer

2011 will be starting pretty good, but the lineup begins to look so-so as the year progresses

Start the new year by installing the correct and proper Burgundy Plaid Studio interior in the Silberrosa

2) rebuild front and rear suspension (Feb)
3) rebuild engine and turbo (Mar)
4) compete repaint (Apr-May)
5) enjoy it (June-Dec)
